4 Handout 4: Propaganda Techniques Directions: Find two different advertisements from a newspaper or magazine for a product that you might realistically purchase. Cut out or photocopy the ads and staple/tape them to this sheet. Read the descriptions below to help you understand about propaganda techniques. Complete the following: Propaganda Definitions Persuasion: the act of influencing someone to think or behave in a certain way. Propaganda: a form of persuasion that influences people to feel strongly for or against someone or something. Propaganda Techniques Bandwagon: based on the expression, jump on the bandwagon, or follow the crowd, or do what everyone else is doing Testimonial: a well-known person endorses a product (says that the product is a good product)-people choose the product based on the opinion of the person, rather than the quality of the product Transfer: a well-known person is pictured with a product but doesn t actually say anything about that product Repetition: a key word or phrase, such as the name or slogan, is used repeatedly within an advertisement Emotional Words: the use of specific words intended to create a strong feeling or emotion in the reader/viewer such as anger, fear, affection, etc. Name Calling: the use of uncomplimentary or derogatory words to describe people or objects in order to influence people about them Faulty Cause and Effect: a technique where a cause/effect relationship is suggested when it does not actually exist Compare and Contrast: a technique where two products are compared/contrasted to show that one is superior to the other Over-generalization: a technique where you are led to jump to a conclusion without enough evidence What technique do you think is most effective?
