1 1 MSDS for Galvanized Carbon Steel Products Section I (General Information) Name: Galvanized Carbon Steel Products: Galvanized High Carbon Steel Wire, Strand, and Wire Rope Manufacturer: WireCo WorldGroup Emergency Telephone Numbers: NW Ambassador Drive (816) (8 a.m. 4 p.m. GMT-6) Kansas City, MO (816) hour Trade name and Synonyms: Galvanized Bright wire, strand, rope and assemblies Issue Date: February 9, 2009 Section II: Ingredients And Recommended Occupational Exposure Limits Note: Steel products under normal conditions do not present an inhalation, or contact health hazard. Base Metal CAS No. % WT Exposure Limits Chemical Symbol OSHA PEL ACGIH TLV Iron Fe Zinc Zn See Annex 1 for balances of Ingredients 10.0 mg/m3 5.0 mg/m3 These products are comprised primarily of high carbon steel. All commercial metals contain small amounts of various elements in addition to those specified. These small quantities frequently referred to as trace or residual elements; generally originate in the raw materials used. Typical levels of commonly involved trace or residual elements that may be encountered in steel products are provided in Annex 1, so their potential hazards may be considered. (see annex 1) Often at the request of a customer or incident in the manufacturing procedure nonmetallic coatings are applied to the product. These are usually classified as protective or lubricative type coatings and include, petroleum or asphaltic based compounds, phosphate, borax, and searate soap. The possible presence of these coatings should be recognized and considered when evaluating exposures and potential hazards during welding or other dust and fume producing operations. Coatings are normally less than 1% of the product by weight. Specific coating MSDS s are available upon request. Section 313 Supplier Notification These products contain threshold concentrations of the following toxic chemicals subject to the reporting requirements of section 313 of the emergency planning and community right-to-know act of 1986 (40 CFR 372): Chromium, Manganese, and Nickel in the amounts noted on Annex 1. This information should be included in all MSDS s that are copied and distributed for these materials.
2 2 Section III Physical Data Boiling Point: Iron: 4950ºf Melting Point: 2400ºf Specific Gravity: 7.85 Vapor Density (air = 1): N/A Percent Volatile by Volume (%): N/A Evaporation Rate: N/A Solubility in Water: None Vapor 909ºF: N/A Appearance and order: Odorless solid, metallic silver as Wire, Strand or Rope Section IV Fire & Explosion Data Steel products in solid state present no fire or explosion hazard. Flammable gases are released when the product is heated or subjected to fire at a sufficient intensity to melt asphalt based lubricant. Section V Reactive Data Stable under normal conditions of use, storage, and transportation. Will react with strong acids to liberate hydrogen. At temperatures above the melting point, may liberate fumes containing oxides of iron and alloying elements. Section VI Health Hazard Data Note: Galvanized steel products under normal conditions do not present an inhalation, Ingestion, or contact hazard. However, operations such as burning, welding, sawing, brazing, grinding, ect, which results in elevating the temperature of the product to or above its melting point or results in the generation of airborne particulates, may present a health hazard. Effects of Overexposure: Chronic: Chronic inhalation of high concentrations of iron oxide fumes or dust concentrations of ferric oxide may possibly enhance the risk of lung cancer development in workers exposed to pulmonary carcinogens. Acute: The inhalation of high concentrations of freshly formed oxide fumes and dust of manganese, copper, zinc and/or lead, in the respirable particle size range can cause an influenza-like illness termed metal fume fever. Typical symptoms last 12 to 48 hours and are characterized by metallic taste in the mouth, dryness and irritation of the throat, followed by weakness, muscle pain, fever and chills Lubricating materials when heated can cause sever burns to exposed body parts. Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated By Exposure: Pre-existing pulmonary conditions or sensitivities. Emergency and First Aid Procedures: For overexposure to airborne fumes and particulates, remove exposed person to fresh air. If breathing is difficult or has stopped, administer artificial respiration or oxygen as indicated. Seek medical attention immediately. Treat metal fume fever by bed rest, and administer a pain and fever reducing medication.
3 3 Burns need to have the heat removed by cool running water. Seek medical attention for any 2 nd or 3 rd degree burn or any time the lubricating material sticks to the burn. Section VII Spill or Leak Procedures Not applicable to steel in the solid state. Waste Disposal Method: Material may be recycled or disposed of in accordance with Federal, State and Local Environmental Regulations. This material may be regulated under CERCLA, TSCA, SARA, and/or RCRA Regulations. Section VIII Special Protection Information Respiratory Protection: Use NIOSH/MSHA approved type respirator for protection against dust and metal fume. Appropriate respirator selection depends on the magnitude of exposure. Ventilation: Local exhaust ventilation should be provided when welding, burning, sawing, brazing, or grinding to prevent excessive particulate exposure.. Skin: Protective gloves should be worn as required for welding, burning or handling operations. Eye Protection: Use safety glasses or goggles as required for welding, burning, sawing, brazing, or grinding to prevent excessive particulate exposure. Other Protective Equipment: Depending upon the conditions of use and specific work situations, additional protective equipment and/or clothing may be required to control exposure. Section IX Special Precautions Precautions to be taken in handling and storing: Operations with the potential for generating high concentrations of airborne particulates should be evaluated and controlled as necessary. Avoid breathing metal fumes and/or dusts. DISCLAIMER: As the conditions or methods of use are beyond our control, we do not assume any responsibility and expressly disclaim any liability for the use of this material. Information contained herein is believed to be true and accurate but all statements or suggestions are made without any warranty, express or implied, regarding accuracy of the information, the hazards connected with the use of the material or the results to be obtained from the use thereof.
