GeoCapacity: international cooperation for matching sources and sinks WP6 Yves-Michel Le Nindre and Delphine Allier BRGM - French Geological Survey GeoCapacity October 21 st and 22 nd, 2009 Copenhagen
WP6 International cooperation and capacity building lead:brgm WP 6.1 Initiation of technology transfer in China Focusing on one province with large CO 2 point sources and investigate the storage potential 地质埋存潜力 WP 6.2 Framework for international cooperation Establish communication links between GeoCapacity and CSLF countries to initiate the technology transfer
WP6.2 - Establish communication links between GeoCapacity and CSLF countries
China
Collaboration & training courses Effective overall collaboration for 6.1 achievements, especially storage Besides scheduled courses, on the job training was provided all along the project. IEA summer school, August 2006 in Kloster Seon (Germany): Participation of three TU Chinese and of two BRGM students ; Dedicated GIS training courses at Tsinghua U November 2006 by BGS; Dedicated GIS training courses at Tsinghua U June 2008 by BGS; One IGGCAS geochemist was invited by BRGM to attend the new training course Modelling chemical reactivity during CO2 geological storage organised by the BRGM - CO2GeoNet Partnership, January 2009.
Clustering with other projects All along the project, joint meetings were held to strengthen the coordination between the different EU CCS projects in China NZEC conference in Beijing and meeting at Tsinghua University first week of July 2006, and joint meeting with the Coach project Joint COACH KoM Nov and GeoCapacity WP6 workshop (23-24 November 2006) in Beijing: defining project strategy COACH meeting at RIPED, Langfang 10 December, 2007 NZEC meeting January China University of Petroleum (Beijing) COACH meeting in Rueil-Malmaison 16 January, 2008 Sedimentary basins workshop : Joint meeting Coach /NZEC/GeoCapacity CUP Dongying - July 2008 Coach Steering Committee and plenary session 15/16 October Beijing : Progress in connected projects (Geocapacity, NZEC, MoveCBM, StraCO2) NZEC workshop 23/24 October Beijing : Geocapacity invited StraCO2 meeting in Beijing, 4-6 December 2008 BRGM participated in CO 2 Capture, Storage & Utilization conference 5-6 March 2009, Beijing

Specific DSS KimCarnot project* (BRGM/TU) 3E/INET (Tsinghua University) and BRGM have developed, on own funding, and in the framework of a cooperation action recommended by WP6.2, a GIS based DSS (Chen et al., 2008). This initiative is based on the need to determine, new routes between sources and sinks, and to handle risks related to the transport, Methods, based on spatial analysis of the different criteria to be taken into consideration for building scenarios of CCS, have been developed and applied to real case studies in the Hebei Province (northeast China). The methodology is going to be applied to the other provinces/ basins (e.g. Jilin), presented at GHGT9 and paper accepted at IJGGC *Kim Domptail, , Laura Guillon, )
Twenty source sink matching pathways GeoCapacity - October 21st and 22nd, 2009 Copenhagen
Russia (Siberia)
Russia Intas Permafrost
Main results on storage strategy Major sources of CO 2 emission in Siberia are located in a region where 22 hydrocarbon fields, suitable for EOR, are present. Mapping the permafrost depth and thickness, and the associated stability domain of the CO 2 hydrates, has shown that a good overlap exists with this area. The isotherms where mapped at different depths in order to delineate the domain matching the two conditions of supercritical CO 2 and of gas hydrates. Therefore the CO 2 should be stored at supercritical state in the HC fields, and trapped by a confining bed. The permafrost will act as a secondary caprock in case where the first one fails, by trapping the CO 2 as hydrate. Deep aquifers were also identified as storage targets but their potential is unknown as they have been poorly explored
Storage strategy in western Siberia Storage opportunities in Western Siberia underneath the permafrost 22 HC fields (EOR) Major emission sources Gas hydrates stability GeoCapacity - October 21st and 22nd, 2009 Copenhagen
Information dissemination Results are available at sorted by objectives and by work packages. Data, maps, and graphics can be viewed. A number of papers were published by the Siberian researchers in Two short papers summarising aims and results of the project are being prepared. They will be published in the ENERG Newsletter (European Network for Research in Geo-Energy) and Greenhouse Issues, a publication of IEA GHG (International Energy Agency, Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme).
CCS in India BRGM is associated with NGRI in the Indo-French Centre for Groundwater Research.(CEFIRES). In association with Indian Institutions* BGS carried out a preliminary investigation of CO 2 sources and possible sink types (IEAGHG R&D Programme project: 'CO 2 Storage Potential in the Indian Subcontinent') BRGM and BGS participated in a promotion of CCS and of EU cooperation in India through an international workshop in Delhi. Carbon Capture and Storage in the Power Sector : R&D Priorities for INDIA, 22 & 23 January, 2008 Based on a robust partnership, BGS (coordinator) and BRGM submitted to the 7th Framework Programme of the EC a research programme for India (CCSINDIA, not accepted). Looking for new incentives, this potential partnership keeps in touch through other activities (peer reviews of papers, groundwater research, raw material exploration, upcoming conferences etc.) *(Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management and an India-based geological consultancy)
CO 2 storage potential in India (preliminary investigation, BGS et al., 2007) Identified and provided locations and estimates of CO 2 emissions Estimated the overall CO 2 storage potential in coal seams, in oil and gas fields Categorized the sedimentary basins in terms of their perceived saline aquifer storage potential Developed flow sheets with indicative costs
