3 Introduction Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Cladding Board and Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board are the most thermally efficient commonly used insulation materials for insulated cladding façade and EIFS applications. Kingspan Kooltherm has an exceptionally low aged lambda (λ) value of W/m 2. K means that, comparatively, much less insulation material is required to meet the desired U-value (W/m 2. K). 4 Main Headings What is? Overview Kingspan Kooltherm is an insulation material, which has a fibre-free rigid thermoset premium performance phenolic insulation core. With a thermal conductivity as low as W/m. K, Kingspan Kooltherm is the most thermally efficient commonly used insulation material. Its low thermal conductivity results in a thinner insulation profile. Kingspan Kooltherm per mm of thickness used, can save more energy, and subsequent carbon dioxide emissions, than any other commonly used insulation material. The core of Kingspan Kooltherm is a 90% (or greater) closed cell structure. Kingspan Kooltherm is CFC/HCFC-free and is manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and low Global Warming Potential. Kingspan Kooltherm boards are produced at Kingspan Insulation s Pembridge, UK, manufacturing facility under a management system certified to ISO 9001: 2008 (Quality Management Systems. Requirements), ISO 14001: 2004 (Environmental Management Systems. Requirements), BS OHSAS 18001: 2007 (Health & Safety Management Systems. Requirements) and ISO 50001: 2011 (Energy Management Systems. Requirements). Complying with Abu Dhabi Quality & Conformity Council, Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL), Qatar Civil Defence and successfully passing many large scale fire tests, such as NFPA 285, BS : 2005, among many more, Kingspan Kooltherm Wall Insulation Solutions are the most widely tested insulation materials available in the Middle East. Using thinner insulation materials can increase the internal footprint of a building, without increasing the external footprint, by providing a thinner external wall profile. 2. Using thinner insulation can help to reduce additional costs of materials such as longer mechanical fasteners and wider brackets. 3. Using Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Cladding Board will negate the need for additional waterproofing and moisture ingress protection within an insulated cladding façade. Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Cladding Board is faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil, which forms a complete air and vapour barrier when taped and sealed within an insulated cladding façade. 4. Using the same thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm as other alternative insulation materials, which have a lower thermal conductivity, will produce a more energy efficient building. 5. Thinner insulation materials, such as Kingspan Kooltherm, can be transported to site much more efficiently. 6 Thermal Efficiency of Different Insulation Materials The greatest reduction in both energy consumption and cooling equipment design capacity was achieved when additional insulation was added to the wall elements Mott MacDonald Introduction In a recent study, commissioned by Kingspan Insulation, independently undertaken by Mott MacDonald, on the benefits of improving U-values, additional insulation added to the external walls of 6 different building types, located across the Middle East, had the most positive effect on energy consumption and carbon emissions when compared against additional insulation added to the floor and roof. Monumental savings could be made by adding additional insulation and improving the U-value of the external walls. Why does this matter for Kingspan Kooltherm TM? As it is the most thermally efficient material commonly used insulation, the profile can be much thinner than other alternatives. As the lambda (λ) of the insulation rises, more insulation will be required to meet the target U-value (W/m 2. K). Insulation Requirements for an Insulated Cladding Façade Kingspan Kooltherm TM K15 Cladding Board is used within insulated cadding façades of the external walls of a building. However, mineral fibre insulation can also be used for this application. Within Mott MacDonald s study, calculations showed that changing from a U-value of 0.45 W/m 2. K to 0.22 W.m 2. K can save up to 77,019 kw.h/year and 55 tonnesco 2 /year in a high-rise building with a wall area of 38,070 m 2. How can you achieve this with different insulation materials? Insulation Requirements for an Exterior Insulation Finishing System Kingspan Kooltherm TM K5 External Wall Board is used within External Insulation Finishing Systems (EIFS) again, in the external walls of a building. However, stone wool and EPS insulation can also be used for this application. Within Mott MacDonald s study, calculations showed that changing from a U-value of 0.45 W/m 2. K to 0.20 W/m 2. K can save up to 6,653 kw.h/year and 4 tonnesco 2 /year in a low-rise building with a wall area of 2,830 m 2. How can you achieve this with different insulation materials? 7 Transporting Different Insulation Materials Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar Transportation The Dubai Green Building Regulations, Abu Dhabi International Code (residential) and the Karamah Regulations state a U-value of 0.57 W/m 2. K must be met in the external walls of all new buildings that are built. The diagram below shows the different quantities of wall insulation that would be required to meet these regulations, in different building types: a villa development, a hotel and a high-rise residential building. 8 Abu Dhabi Transportation The Abu Dhabi International Code states a U-value of W/m 2. K must be met in the external walls of all new commercial buildings built. The diagram below shows the different amounts of wall insulation that would be required to meet the Abu Dhabi International Code, in different building types: a hotel, a high-rise commercial building and a low-rise commercial building. 9 Why Should We Be Using Closed Cell Insulation Materials? It is important to distinguish between open cell and closed cell structures in Phenolic, PIR, XPS and EPS insulation, as their respective performance characteristics vary widely. For closed cell insulation, the thermal conductivity, also known as the lambda value (λ), of the insulation is directly related to the lambda value of the blowing agent that is used during the manufacture of the insulation, and that sits inside the cells. The retention of this blowing agent, in a closed cell structure, is what delivers a long term high thermal performance. In open cell insulation, blowing agents leak out of the porous material, being replaced by air. The degree of movement through the body of the material is dependent on a range of factors, including the size and density of the cells, moisture ingress, as well as the chemical composition of the material itself. This can have the effect of reducing the thermal performance of the product by around 50%. Long term this will mean that U-values, which are specified at the design stage, will not be met. 10 Environmental Impact and Responsible Sourcing Green Guide Rating An ecoprofile, certified by BRE Certification to the 2008 BRE Environmental Profiles Methodology, has been created for Kingspan Kooltherm TM K15 Cladding Board and Kingspan Kooltherm TM K5 External Wall Board produced at Kingspan Insulation s Pembridge, UK and Castleblayney, Ireland manufacturing facilities. The BRE has assigned both products a 2008 Green Guide Summary Rating of A+. Kingspan Kooltherm TM K15 Cladding Board and Kingspan Kooltherm TM K5 External Wall Board manufactured at Kingspan Insulation's Pembridge, UK manufacturing facility are certified to BES 6001 (Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products) `Excellent'. 11 How Can Kingspan Kooltherm Help with Global Warming and Ozone Depletion? It is important to understand that, whilst reducing the energy consumption and related carbon dioxide emissions of a building, thermal insulation can negatively impact on climate change and ozone depletion, if it is not manufactured in a responsible way. Blowing agents are typically used to enhance the thermal performance of PIR, Phenolic, EPS and XPS insulation, by filling the cells within the insulation with a low thermal conductivity gas. This gas can be released into the atmosphere through various channels, such as during the manufacture of the product, during transit or after the product is ceased to be used. Additionally, as previously mentioned, open cell insulation materials will allow the blowing agent to disperse into the atmosphere. Blowing agents used in the manufacture of the aforementioned insulation products, such as CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs, can accelerate climate change and ozone depletion if they are released into the atmosphere. A blowing agents impact on ozone depletion and climate change is characterised by its Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) or Global Warming Potential (GWP). All products in the Kingspan Kooltherm range are manufactured with a blowing agent that has Zero ODP and Low GWP. In the case of insulation products, the three most important determinants of fire performance are Reaction to Fire, Fire Resistance and Smouldering Combustion (or Punking). Different insulation materials perform in various, sometimes unexpected, ways in each of these dimensions of fire performance. Their performance will vary depending on insulation material type, density, and the nature of any facing materials attached to the faces of the insulation material. Kingspan Kooltherm TM insulation boards feature the best combination of fire performance characteristics of any foam insulation material, and can have fire performance characteristics almost on a par with, and in some cases better than, mineral and glass fibre insulation products. Products in the Kingspan Kooltherm TM range can achieve a classification as good as Class 0 to the English Building Regulations, when tested to BS476-6: 1989 (Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test for fire propagation for products) and BS 476-7: 1997 (Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test to determine the classification of the surface spread of flame of products). Kingspan Kooltherm TM K15 Cladding Board, has been successfully tested and / or certified, with a range of cladding materials, to NFPA 285: 2012 (Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components), in all cases in accordance with the performance criteria set out in Underwriters Laboratory (UL) at its fire test facility in Northbrook, IL. Reaction to Fire Rigid thermoset phenolic insulation, unlike thermoplastic materials, does not melt, drip or produce flaming droplets. Its intricately cross linked structure makes it difficult to ignite and, when subjected to fire, its outer surface forms a strong carbonaceous layer that limits heat generation and retards further flame spread. Furthermore, there is an almost complete absence of smoke when subjected to a flame source. Products in the Kingspan Kooltherm TM range and the rigid thermoset insulation core of products in the Kingspan Kooltherm TM range can achieve a Flame Spread Index (FSI) of 25 and a Smoke Developed Index (SDI) of 50 when tested to UL 723 (Surface Burning Characteristics) and ASTM E 84 (Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). 12

15 Thermal Properties The λ values and R values detailed below are quoted in accordance with ASTM C 518. Thermal Conductivity The boards achieve a thermal conductivity (λ value) of: W/m.K at 23 C mean temperature. Thermal Resistance Thermal resistance can be expressed in either metric or imperial measurement. Using the imperial measurement, the boards achieve a thermal resistance (R-value) per inch of thickness of 7.21 ft 2.hr.0 f/btu. The metric measurement of thermal resistance (R value) varies with thickness and is calculated by dividing the thickness of the board (expressed in metres) by its thermal conductivity. The resulting number is rounded down to the nearest 0.05 (m 2.K/W). Insulant Thickness (mm) Thermal Resistance (m 2.K/W) With a thermal conductivity as low as W/m.
