RFID Applications for Construction of Transportation Projects Edward Jaselskis Professor, Iowa State University Program Director, NSF Washington, D.C. October 17, 2006
Asset Tracking Outline Bulk and Engineered Materials Tools (individually and in tool boxes) Quality Control Concrete cylinders RFID in an Integrated System Environment RFID for Transportation Infrastructure Applications Conclusion
Asset Tracking Tracking bulk and engineering items using passive RFID tags in late 90 s Pipe Supports/hangers received using RFID on two Bechtel projects (Red Hills and Exxon Baytown) CII Report 151-1: 1: RFID Applications for the Construction Industry
Materials Receiving: Redhills Power Plant Materials Receiving: Baytown Refinery RFID TAG
RFID Strengths Pilot Results Time savings (one instead of two people and quicker data entry) Tags reuseable Workers receiving materials on site liked technology Flag written to tag indicated received item RFID Limitations Beneficial to have visual identification on tag Metal interferes with reader
RFID for Precast Concrete Members Ruentex Corporation
Material Tracking Engineered Items: Active RFID ISARC 2004 (SA-0143) Song, Caldas, Ergen,, Haas, and Akinci
Current Identification of Pipe Spools Identification using metal tags is: Time-consuming, error-prone Pipe spools get misplaced
Truck Passing thru Portal 10 ft 14 ft I-D D and I-Q I Q Tags used 83 Pipe spools tracked 4 days and 70 truck passes Antenna 6 ft Reader on/off Cable to 4 antennas 14 ft
Conclusions Current active RFID technology can automatically identify pipe spools accurately and precisely as they are shipped and received on a flatbed trailer No. of antennas & traveling speed are critical to achieving 100% reading consistently Deploying RFID systems at major portals enables one to automate tracking pipe spools through the supply chain
Tool Tracking RFID Application Active RFID tags attached to construction tools and equipment Assure that workers have the tools needed to do the job Courtesy of Dr. Paul Goodrum, University of Kentucky
Identec s Active Tag System Tools tracked on four sites
Pilot Project Results All Tags Survived None Impacted Tool Performance All Provided Usable Read Range for Tool Tracking» Over Did observe decrease in read range with drop in ambient air temperature
Tool Tracking in Gangbox Tested at the Zachry Construction s s tool center in San Antonio, Texas (March 2005) Gangbox Reliability Comparison between Barcode and RFID Kang and Sutton
Gangbox Test: Configuration RFID signal monitoring application elink Receiver
Gangbox Test: Result Lid Opened Lid Closed Total number of tools (out of 210 tools) successfully identified in the gangbox 206 / / 210
Conclusion RFID tags were reliably identified in the gangbox regardless of metal interference and tag congestion RFID based tool check-in and check-out process took less time than Barcode based process

Automated tracking and capturing of Engineered-to to-order order products using RFID and GPS Problem: Product history information is needed for better facilities operation and management. Current paper-based approach is inefficient and ineffective. Current barcode-based based and manual material tracking is ineffective and inefficient. Opportunity: Providing level 1 intelligence on facility components using RFID tags. Combining GPS and RFID for automated material tracking. Targeting all phases: manufacturing, construction, facility management
Research Vision Level 1 intelligence Construction site Arrival to site 5 Storage 3, 4, 5 Installation 5, 6 Manufacturing Plant Shipping to site Reader & GPS Reader 5 Information Items that are transferred 1. Manufacturing info 2. Storage & handling manual 3. Inspection info Operations & maintenance Storage at plant 4, 5 4. Storage & location info 5. Status info Maintenance Manufacturing 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 6. Final location at the structure 3, 7 RFID tag is attached 7. Maintenance info Info

Electronic Batch Ticket using RFID Home Office (Server) PCC Lab 8 Batch Plant Construction Site Field Test Results (Slump and Air Entrainment) 5 3 RFID Tag RFID Tag
Transportation Infrastructure Construction Applications Tracking modularized bridge components Tracking materials being hauled on (and off) site (e.g., concrete, asphalt, soil) Labeling Concrete cylinders Soil samples Work zone access control for personnel and vehicles
Conclusion RFID is a proven technology that can benefit construction of transportation infrastructure projects
