1 Control Methods Workshop 2012 Welcome and background Neil Hubbard, Head of MARS Unit Serving society Stimulating innovation Supporting legislation Who are we and what do we do? JRC is the European Commission s in-house science service. It provides the science for policy decisions, with a view to ensuring that the EU achieves its Europe 2020 goals for a productive economy as well as a safe, secure and sustainable future. The JRC plays a key role in the European Research Area and reinforces its multi-disciplinarity by networking extensively with leading scientific organisations in the Member States, Associated Countries and worldwide. 2 1
2 The MARS Unit mission Focusing on crop production and agricultural activities, the MARS Unit provides timely forecasts, early assessments and the scientific underpinning for efficient monitoring and control systems. The work serves the Agriculture and Food policies of the European Union, their impact on rural economies and on the environment, encompassing the global issues of food security and climate change. The JRC Vision driven by the Europe 2020 Strategy is to be a trusted provider of science-based policy options to EU policymakers to address key challenges facing our society, underpinned by internationally-recognised research. 3 The JRC inside the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso 27 Commission Members Commissioner Mairé Geoghegan-Quinn Research, Innovation & Science Director-General Dominique Ristori Joint Research Centre DG Research & Innovation (RTD) 4 2
