ENERGY STAR Resources for Airport Sustainability Airports Going Green Conference November 13, 2013 Chicago, IL Audrie Hicks Washington ENERGY STAR Program Manager US EPA Midwest Region
Why care about energy efficiency? Commercial buildings and industrial facilities generate about 50 percent of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. Average building wastes 30 percent of the energy it consumes Reductions of 10 percent or more in energy use is possible with little or no cost. Airports are well positioned to take action to manage energy use and raise awareness with visitors.
ENERGY STAR Commercial Buildings Program Offers a strategic approach to energy management Helps building owners, managers, and tenants to save money & protect the environment Provides measurable information on energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions Builds on strong ENERGY STAR brand recognition ENERGY STAR on a building = Superior Energy Performance Benchmarking is the first step 10
Management Tool Helps business and organizations by offering a platform to: Assess whole building energy and water consumption Track changes in energy, water, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost over time Track green power purchase Share/report data with others Create custom reports Apply for ENERGY STAR certification Metrics Calculator Provides key performance metrics to integrate into a strategic management plan Energy consumption (source, site, weather normalized) Water consumption (indoor, outdoor) Greenhouse gas emissions (indirect, direct, total, avoided) ENERGY STAR 1-to-100 score (available for many building types) Accessible in a free, online secure platform: 11
Enhance Airport Sustainability with Benchmarking Understand energy, water, financial, and environmental performance Prioritize energy efficiency investments Set improvement targets and track progress Report energy savings to comply with grant or incentive requirements Use Portfolio Manager reports and graphics to communicate successes internally and externally 12
Required Information for Benchmarking in Portfolio Manager Property Information Function Name, street address, zip code for weather normalization Property type data Gross floor area Use details (Example - weekly operating hours, number of computers, number of workers on the main shift, etc.) Energy consumption data Property-specific invoice information from all purchased and on-site generated energy for all fuel types 13
Standard Reports Performance Highlights Energy Performance Emissions Performance Water Performance Fuel Performance ENERGY STAR Certification Status Partner of the Year Report Sustainable Buildings Checklist Report 14
Motivating Change through Voluntary Programs We all know that energy efficiency makes good business sense as well as good environmental sense, but a contest like this is a great way to help companies get started. Judy Poferl President and CEO Northern States Power Minnesota, an Xcel Energy
A Model Program Chief s Energy Challenge A challenge to fire departments across the country to save energy, costs, and GHG Pilot led by Cary, NC Goal to reduce energy use by 20% over 3 years Track savings in Portfolio Manager Good model for other unique facilities, like airports! 16
Get Engaged Join as an ENERGY STAR Partner (it s free and voluntary!) Access all ENERGY STAR resources for your facilities Learn more about Portfolio Manager and get started with benchmarking Register for regular EPA ENERGY STAR web-based training webinars 17
ENERGY STAR Resources for Airport Sustainability Visit the ENERGY STAR tools library for resources to help you: Communicate the value of energy efficiency to stakeholders Make the business case for energy improvements Provide staff with guidance to plan and implement cost effective energy efficiency improvements Plan and launch a successful energy efficiency campaign or competition Benchmark facilities with Portfolio Manager to understand energy, water, financial and environmental performance 18
