2 IRMFCs Why they motivate us IRMFCs (Internal reforming methanol fuel cells) have the fundamental advantage explained as follows: 1. Methanol steam reforming reaction (MSR) can be stated as: 2. Ea of C-C bond breaking in alkane HCs > Ea of C-C bond breaking in oxygenated HCs. 3. Methanol (CH 4 O) has no C-C bond, also is an oxygenated HC. 4. Enthalpy of CH 3 OH combustion at 25 C & 1 atm: -727 kj/mol 5. When 131 kj/mol is supplied by the excess heat from a HT PEMFC, facilitating MSR, the reformate produced has 858 kj/mol 6. A HT PEMFC & an MSR operating at 210 C takes advantage of the above features. 7. Result is a high energy density liquid fuel based power generating system. 8. Continuous battery charging provided by IRMFCs (MSR+HT PEMFC) offer unique opportunities. by ZBT all rights reserved. Confidential no passing on to third parties 2
