2 Mission: The mission of the National Runaway Safeline is to help keep America s runaway, homeless and at-risk youth safe and off the streets. The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) serves as the federally designated national communication system for runaway and homeless youth. The services are provided through funding from the Family and Youth Services Bureau in the Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NRS also receives support from individual donors, corporate partners, and foundation grants. NRS began in 1971 as Metro-Help to fill a comprehensive crisis intervention for the young people of Chicago. In 1974, Metro-Help received a federal demonstration grant to establish a national hotline, and over 11,000 calls were received in just eight months, indicating the need for this critical service. Over the last 47 years, NRS has continued to grow as the needs of the nation s youth have grown. Today, NRS makes 250,000 connections annually of help and hope through its hotline, online and off-line services. The RUNAWAY hotline and the 1800runaway.org online crisis services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days each year. The team of 25 staff and over 120 hotline crisis volunteers make this service possible. The board engaged in Strategic Planning in the Fall of 2017, and at the end of the process, the much admired Executive Director, Maureen Blaha announced her retirement. Maureen has served at the helm of NRS for over 17 years and will transition into retirement with the hiring of the next executive leader. 3 The Opportunity: Executive Director The National Runaway Safeline is seeking a visionary and strategic Executive Director to take the nation s national communication system for runaway, homeless and at-risk youth and establish a truly national resource for runaway support, awareness and prevention. The Executive Director will provide leadership for mission affirmation, vision-setting, diversified funding efforts, program effectiveness and growth, and budget oversight, all while serving as the public ambassador for NRS nationwide. As leader of the 25-member staff (4 direct reports), the next Executive Director will focus on relationship building, strategic planning, revenue diversification and program execution for the future of NRS. The new Executive Director will report to the Board Chair and work closely with the Board of Directors to enact vision and strategy for the organization while further expanding NRS s public image. Such will be achieved by the new Executive Director developing a master plan to secure diversified funding for the next phase of NRS operations using the existing strategic plan as inspiration. Bringing fine-tuned executive experience, the Executive Director will create and maintain highly productive relationships with board members, funders, elected officials, volunteers and community partners, as well as provide visionary leadership to staff and volunteers. 4 Performance Objectives Visionary and Executive Leadership Revenue Development and Philanthropy Create vision and strategy in collaboration with board, partners, and staff for new, innovative youth services; including runaway prevention programs, community awareness and services. Explore opportunities for maximizing organizational resources, including future partnerships, mergers/collaborations and capacity building. Ensure that programs are mission driven, in line with strategic plan goals and integrated service lines. Continue to elevate the profile and work of NRS on a national level, creating high-level strategy and vision. Serve as a national leader by building and maintaining relationships with other organizations and entities whose missions intersect with that of NRS to achieve collective impact. Build a strong and engaging relationship with the Board of Directors that is fully transparent, with a focus on supporting their role as leaders in governance and ambassadorship. Further, support the board in its own efforts for training, growth, diversification and optimal performance. Communicate effectively and promptly with the board and serve as the strongest link of communication between board members, staff, volunteers, elected officials, and the community at-large/other stakeholders. Expand and diversify all revenue streams, with a plan established in collaboration with the Board of Directors. Cultivate a portfolio of personal relationships related to all revenue sources and lead stewardship activities on major fundable initiatives for the organization. Work with and provide training for the board to create an overall culture of philanthropy. Foster greater board involvement in fundraising and friend-raising, including prospect/donor identification, peer-to-peer outreach, meeting with funders, knowledge exchange and/or donor stewardship. Provide executive leadership for NRS philanthropic efforts, maximizing corporate partnerships and cultivating top donors and national leaders, including development and implementation of fundraising plans that support strategies and priorities adopted by the Board of Directors. Strategically steward a successful continued relationship with NRS federal funding partner. Strategically align grant opportunities with programmatic priorities, with a focus on long-term stability and security. Communicate effectively and promptly with the Board of Directors. 5 Performance Objectives cont. Relationship Management and Outreach Administration and Management Create and maintain solid relationships at the local, state and national levels to ensure NRS is established as the premier organizational resource for runaway youth nationwide. Act as NRS ambassador to the external community in an articulate, passionate and visible manner, articulating the needs of the organization and thereby ensuring strong relationships that result in additional resources. Collaborate with all internal and external partners to ensure the mission, vision and values of NRS are understood and executed. Foster strong relationships with staff and volunteers to ensure consistency in programs, with an eye toward growth. Create a strong and polished message about the work of NRS to ensure consistency and strong positioning in the nation s consciousness, with an intentional focus on raising the profile to a broader and wider group of stakeholders and partners. Maintain active membership and a strong presence in professional organizations, community groups, and other spaces relevant to the work of NRS and its mission. Recruit, lead, develop, motivate, supervise, evaluate and maintain a highly effective, productive and cohesive staff with both professional/technical expertise and programmatic talent. Create strong, achievable performance goals for each staff member and ensure benchmarks are met in meeting goals. Manage and lead staff through a lens of flexibility, openness to suggestions, and ability to resolve/mitigate conflict. Carry out organizational initiatives, anticipating community needs for youth services and fostering a climate of innovation and evidence/outcome-based approaches. Provide leadership to NRS operations and programs under the current strategic plan and annual budget. Ensure a positive workplace culture and an effective staff organization. Engage in continuing education and encourage the same amongst staff, with a particular focus in communications technology, fundraising and youth services. In collaboration with the Finance Director, develop an annual operating budget and ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines. Regularly monitor budgets and cash flow statements. Assure the systems and programs are in place to recruit, train, retain and engage a dedicated corps of volunteer service providers (aka liners). Explore concepts, in collaboration with program directors, to unify and propel volunteer relationships forward. Provide staff training and oversight in volunteer relationship management. Maintain consistent reporting on the organization s financial position and outlook and ensure fiscal responsibility and ability to meet funder guidelines. 6 The Qualified Candidate The National Runaway Safeline seeks a passionate, strategic, executive leader as its Executive Director, a confident relationship-builder who will lead the organization into the future. The successful candidate will be a forward-thinking and dynamic servant leader with proven ability to create strong, meaningful relationships and multiply/grow a program in scale and scope. NRS next leader will have a minimum of seven years of progressive and executive level experience, with at least four years leading a senior team. The next Executive Director will also bring the experience of successfully managing complicated relationships with government funding entities and creating and developing private philanthropy programs. Strong experience in youth and prevention services is highly preferred, with the ability to develop strong relationships with the youth services community nationwide. Specific Requirements Include A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in leadership and management, with documented ability to manage staff and lead teams (four years desired). Bachelor s degree in a related field required; Master s degree highly preferred. Strong experience working directly with/for an engaged Board of Directors. Ability to assist board members in understanding and appreciating their roles and responsibilities. Proven ability to build strong relationships with a variety of external constituents, including national leaders, government officials, public leadership, partner organizations and other stakeholders. Track record in developing and executing strategies to successfully increase revenue and diversify funding sources. Proven success in maintaining strong and productive work teams, with a focus on mentoring and nurturing staff development. Experience leading staff through a significant organizational transition is a plus. Track record of recruiting, training and retaining a dedicated core of volunteer service providers. Demonstrated success implementing strategic technology and communications tools in support of organizational mission. Strong analytic and strategic-thinking skills, with demonstrated ability to create, implement, and monitor complex plans and translate those plans into goals and concrete strategies. Background in youth service programs is beneficial. Experience building a national nonprofit brand, including building relationships with donors and program awareness nationwide. Career track record that shows stability with an organization and capacity to develop and nurture relationships culminating in overall success.
