The successor of the well-tried MM 301 has been further optimized with regards to efficiency and operating comfort. Disruption of cells and tissues The mixer mill is the standard device for the disruption of tissues and cells for DNA/RNA extraction in many laboratories. Special adapter racks are available which can be equipped with 10 disposable reaction vials each. Cell disruption is achieved through the impact and grinding effect of glass, zirconium, tungsten carbide or stainless steel balls on the sample material. Cryogenic grinding Another application area of the Mixer Mill is grinding under liquid nitrogen. After an average grinding time of only 2-3 minutes, the MM 400 produces a completely homogenized sample. In contrast to other methods, no previous or intermediate cooling is required which keeps the consumption of liquid nitrogen extremely low. RETSCH offers a Cryo kit which makes cryogenic grinding with the mixer mill especially safe and simple.

3 Mixer Mill MM 200 The Mixer Mill MM 200 is also used for efficient size reduction and homogenization and works with the same functional principle as the MM 400. It is highly suitable for grinding dry samples in small quantities and offers a favourably priced alternative to the MM 400 for routine applications. The grinding jars for the MM 200 have a push-fit lid. They are available in 5 different materials and sizes of 1.5 ml, 5 ml, 10 ml and 25 ml. The Champion on all Circuits The high-quality grinding jars with screw-top lid, which are used in the MM 400, are available in 6 different materials, covering a wide range of applications. They come in sizes from 1.5 ml to 50 ml. A maximum of 40 ml (2 x 20 ml) of sample material can be processed, the feed size of which should not exceed 8 mm. Sample Preparation for XRF analysis The MM 400 is highly suitable for the preparation of small sample amounts for subsequent XRF analysis. It achieves grind sizes down to 5 µm and is much more comfortable to operate than the more expensive disc mills, dishand-puck mills or shatterboxes. If the sample is to be pressed into pellets, then the homogenization of sample material and wax can be carried out directly in a polystyrene grinding jar. Sample preparation of tablets and capsules The grinding and homogenization of tablets and capsules for subsequent analysis of the active substances can be carried out very efficiently in the MM 400. In contrast to conventional methods involving a mortar, solvent and ultrasound for extraction of the analytes, the complete grinding and extraction procedure takes approx. 2 minutes in the Mixer Mill. Moreover, the use of the same jar for grinding and extracting guarantees loss-free sample processing.

5 Planetary Ball Mill PM 100 CM The new Planetary Ball Mill PM 100 CM offers all the performance and convenience of the classic PM 100, only the speed ratio of sun wheel to grinding jar has been changed to 1:-1. This results in a different ball movement, so that the sample is not so much crushed by impact effects but more gently ground by pressure and friction which causes less abrasion. The PM 100 CM is a suitable alternative for all applications where size reduction should not be carried out with maximum energy input. Pressure and Temperature under Control! Measuring System PM GrindControl In order to understand the processes which occur during grinding with ball mills (e.g. chemical reactions, phase changes), it is helpful to record the most important thermodynamic parameters: pressure and temperature. Planetary ball mills are frequently used for the development of new materials by mechanical alloying due to their high energy input. The processes and reactions which take place in the grinding jar during grinding can be monitored and controlled. The PM GrindControl is available for stainless steel grinding jars of 250 ml and 500 ml. A transmitter which is integrated in the jar lid sends digital signals to a stationary receiver which is connected to a PC. Up to 200 values are measured per second (single transmission mode). The transmission protocol is a very safe industry standard. Once the data is transmitted to the PC, it can easily be processed with LIMS programs. 6 Pellet Press PP 40 RETSCH now offers the new Pellet Press PP 40 as a useful addition to sample preparation in the RS 200. This instrument features an individual pressure force regulation in the range of 50 to 400 kn. It controls not only the pressure force, but also the pressure build-up and release during the pressing process. This reduces the internal stress on the sample and ensures that even difficult materials are pressed perfectly. The combined use of RS 200 and PP 40 allow for a substantially higher sample throughput for XRF analyses.
