4 Activities of Global Center for Urban Sanitation (GCUS) Global Center for Urban Sanitation (GCUS) performs various activities to introduce Japanese sewerage technologies and expertise to the world. Enhancing cooperation with various countries through sewerage-related activities To support the global community in the field of sewerage, GCUS has been making technological exchanges with various countries. Providing technical support and implementing projects through JICA to improve existing treatment plants (introduction of advanced treatment and energy-saving technology) (China) Promoting sewerage works through Japanese yen-loan-financed businesses, accepting trainees to establish maintenance and control (Field investigation in Saudi Arabia) systems, providing technical support by dispatching experts, and forming bilateral networks (India, Vietnam) Providing training for learning management and control technologies prior to privatization of sewerage works and holding seminars for introducing Japanese membrane treatment technologies (Saudi Arabia) Holding seminars with sewerage-related (Sewerage investigative team in Vietnam) organizations and private corporations, and having technological exchange at each visit by an investigative team to Japan To create projects GCUS in collaboration with private corporations did study in Viet Nam, had discussions with key persons to utilize Japanese technologies Transmitting technological information on sewerage from Japan to overseas countries To use substantial Japanese technologies and experience for the world, we focus on finding measures to satisfy requirements of each country, and collect/transmit necessary information. To boost overseas sewerage investment, GCUS and private corporations jointly hold overseas seminars, study technical problems hampering sound sewerage systems in each country, and make presentations concerning sewerage engineering through overseas seminars We participate in international events and attend and hold seminars to form a network of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, thus assisting capacity building of the relevant countries, providing technical support to the m and exchanging information with them

5 Preface Regarding sewerage development, Japan has a special experience in progress in construction of sewerage and development of sewer network at the same time including good maintenance of it in a short period. Japan has constructed and maintained sewerage facilities with state of the art technology, especially, such as advanced treatment, urban storm water control(measures for intensified heavy rain), combined sewer overflow (CSO)control, wastewater reuse, recycling of sludge as resources(sludge carbonization), energy-saving treatment and rehabilitation/renewal of facilities. We are confident that these technologies and engineers in Japan will make a contribution to resolution of sewerage problems at a lot of locations all over the world. As one of GCUS activities, urban sanitation study group which consists of 20 enterprises and institute (JIWET) was set up. The objectives of this study group are to research sewerage technology trend, to carry out a feasibility study on urban sanitation technology and to disseminate technical information in developing countries. This booklet introduces state of the art technology of our each member.
