FPSuite TM and EFI: A winning solution + FPInnovations Wood Fibre Forum November 2010 Jean Favreau, Mihai Pavel FPInnovations, Value Maximization
Introduction Improving forest inventory is a key success factor to increase the net value coming from the forest and to take better harvesting decisions at operational level EFI (ALidar, TLidar, knn, etc.) can provide better information on locations, volumes and attributes and at tree, stand, terrain and biomass levels EFI is beneficial for FPSuite and NCCruise
FPSuite TM Some Context Pulp and paper mills control paper production parameters right on the rolls Sawmills control the lumber manufacturing process in real-time BUT Forest operations have virtually no process control systems Transformation to a «pull» mode with a flexible supply chain requires an efficient, real-time process control system 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
Process Control Issues in Forest Operations Difficult to plan because of uncertainty in the field Difficult to acquire information in real-time (distance, remoteness, communications) Difficult to react to changes to requirements or operating context Difficult to centralize and manage information on performance and production 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited. 01/12/2010 5
FPInterface TM GIS based software using forest maps and company data Built-in FPInnovations knowledge for cost and productivity prediction Can simulate and predict: Harvesting costs Transport costs Road costs Silviculture costs Biomass costs Plan operations with work calendars using work teams and productivity versus site conditions 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
Overview of FPInterface modules Transfer yards Forest Inventory EFI Work schedule Truck scheduler Optim. schedule Transport FPInterface Platform Wood flow Maxtour BIOS Silviculture Net value Bucking optim. Carbon ratio
FPInterface TM - Harvesting simulation 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
Harvesting simulation Ability to generate a cost by block or by aggregate of blocks (road, zone, region, attributes)
Wood density 1: > 0.3 and =< : > 0.36 and =< : > 0.39 and =< : > 0.41 and =< : > 0.44
EFI benefits on the annual operating plan Costs and productivities predicted by FPInterface are based on forest inventory data: Volume (stem, ha, product) Volume (area, destination) Bucking and log lengths Branchiness Terrain (area, slope, roughness, solidity, distance) Within cutblock variations help to develop good sorting strategies
FPInterface TM - Transportation Cycles/Costs 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
EFI benefits on the transport planning More accurate volume at roadside means: right number of trucks/period good truck scheduling to increase utilization right routes with backhauling Assessment of moisture content and wood green density are essential to maximize payloads Good information on terrain conditions are needed to plan the terminal road network
FPInterface TM Schedule Work 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPInterface TM - Visualize Wood Flow 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
EFI benefits on the work schedule More accurate stand table provides the data needed to produce the desired mix of products Wrong volumes means: shifting of whole process re-scheduling of activities reduction of machine utilization difficulty to maximize mill productivity increasing wood inventory buffers along the wood supply chain
Silviculture simulation
Biomass simulation Recoverable versus total onsite as a function of harvest system (i.e. slash at roadside versus at the stump) Biomass flow tracking tool for potential vs technical availability (biomass expected quantities) Cost calculations based on harvest system and sites ($/odt)
Biomass module
Carbon Ratio Round wood Logging Biomass recovery Biomass Transport Carbon Ratio
EFI benefits on the biomass module EFI provides: right biomass quantities (tops, bark, branches, foliage, stumps) availability at stand, stump and roadside locations moisture content per species more accurate carbon ratio
Margin analysis (net value) FPInterface (costs) and Optitek (values) link so that more global simulations of value chains from the resource to the final product can be conducted Expected product value minus harvest costs = net block value Display results directly on forest map
EFI benefits on the net value Optitek uses the following attributes: taper sweep knots wood density Net value is very sensitive to the accuracy of the stand tables EFI has the potential to cover the entire annual plan and then provide better information than now (scanner)
FPDat TM Get Data From the Operations Rugged PC with color touch screen Motion sensor, input channels, GPS Navigation system Track logs exchange between machines Detailed input from operators Operator ID Stop codes Activity codes Specific inputs by machine type Onboard reporting (KPIs) Specific configurations/machine 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPDat TM Screen Shots 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPCom TM Satellite Modem Allows a quasi real time flow of information Allows bi-directional communications Automated downloads (no manual intervention) DB 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPCom TM Mobile Download Station Automatic data transfer when in proximity of machines Downloads to office computer using cell modem Allows track logs exchange between machines DB 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
EFI benefits on the use of FPDat Location of obstacles, water crossings, sensitive sites with accuracy will increase the use of navigation system Full-tree system is «unable» to assess volumes but combining tracklogs with EFI can provide volumes Allows operators to anticipate changes in silvicultural prescriptions (no ribbon) EFI provides detailed maps for the multi-treatment approach (more than one set of guidelines within the cutblock)
FPTrak TM FPTrak is a Web and GIS platform Used to monitor performance and production FPDat configuration through FPTrak Version 1.0 planned for winter FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPTrak TM Data sharing between users, but sensitive information is protected Will allow manual inputs for production monitoring (e.g. roadside inventories) Connection to other data streams (e.g. mill scales) Will support StanForD production files (e.g. prd files from harvester computers) 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPTrak TM 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
FPTrak TM 2009 FPInnovations. All rights reserved. Copying and redistribution prohibited
EFI benefits on FPTrak More accurate harvested areas and volumes mean: right volume per harvested trail and product right volume at roadside per pile and location less data conciliation along the chain of production less scaling along the wood supply chain
FPSuite Benefits Productivity and utilization tracking of equipment, typically leading to utilization improvements of 5-10% Enable operations managers to focus on the most important tasks of improving operations based on real numbers FPInterface provides efficient tools for planning, budgeting and scheduling operations, and also to readjust schedules easily if needed FPDat on-board system features help operators and contractors improve their performance and efficiency FPCom and FPTrak modules provide an automated, reliable and cost effective process to acquire, host and manage operational data and key performance indicators from the field EFI is essential to take advantage of the above benefits 01/12/2010 Confidential For employees only. 34
NCCruise
NCCruise New Compilation & Cruising Developed as part of BC Coastal Initiative can be also applied in Interior BC and Alberta Using standard inventory data (timber cruising) to predict volume by company log sorts in various market conditions EFI would allow a better prediction Ongoing work to link NCCruise to FPInterface
NCCruise vs. Current Practice
NCCruise - Principles G 3 Taper equation DP algorithm for bucking trees to maximize value G 2 n+1 n n-1 n-k N R[V(D n, D n-k, l), U S,g (q 1, q 2, q 3, q 4, q 5 )] f n-k f n = m ax { R[V(D n, D n-k, l), U S,g (q 1, q 2, q 3, q 4, q 5 )] + f n-k } k G 1 Algorithm for individual trees: Dynamic Programming (DP)
NCCruise User interface & Results
EFI benefits summary EFI is key success factor for FPInnovations at operational level FPSuite will be a better value proposition with Enhanced Inventory module Enhanced Inventory has a positive impact on: planning/scheduling of machines/processing facilities bucking/sorting strategies, destination of products wood allocation (fibre yield, wood net value) biomass recovery and technical availibility monitoring of processing activities
EFI benefits summary Work in progress: FPInterface database structure to use Enhanced Inventory data Potential projects Case study to demonstrate the potential of EFI FPInterface/FPSuite (ROI assessment) Improved navigation EFI - FPDat for refined silvicultural treatments
