3 At Southern Health we offer Apprenticeship Programmes that develop industry specific skills. By combining work and training, our Apprentices develop vocational skills and essential knowledge. Apprentices are supported throughout the programme, to ensure maximum benefits for all. If you are interested in employing an Apprentice, we will work with you throughout the process. What is an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a great way to combine learning with working. Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which leads to a national recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are used to train new and existing employees and provide them with new skills. An Apprenticeship is made up a group of qualifications, called a framework, it includes: Technical Certificate (Award, Certificate, Diploma) This qualification provides the theory and understanding which gives the Apprentice the underpinning knowledge of the industry in which they are working. This qualification is usually delivered at College on a day-release basis Work-based Learning NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are achieved through assessment and training in the workplace. They are recognised by employers as evidence that apprentices are competent in their job role and meet the national standards set by the Sector Skills Council for the industry sector. Functional Skills (English, maths and ICT) Functional Skills in English, maths and information communications technology (ICT) are included in the Apprenticeship and equip learners with the practical skills required in everyday life, education and the workplace. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Apprentices are required to demonstrate that they know and understand areas such as employer and employee right and responsibilities, equality and diversity and health and safety procedures for their organisation. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Apprentices will have the opportunity to develop skills and qualities that are important in preparing for successful learning, work and life. Skills include planning and decision making, problem solving and setting targets, working effectively with others, creativity and enterprise

4 Apprenticeship Framework - Overview by Area We offer various apprenticeship frameworks. Below are examples of a few. Business and Administration This is suitable for anyone who is working or would like to work in a business administration environment. Job roles may include Officer Junior, Administrator or receptionist. Apprentices will receive the relevant training required to work in an administrative role within a wide range of business settings. Customer Service This Apprenticeship can be applied to many job roles across different sectors. As a Customer Service Apprentice, they will be making sure that customers are dealt with in a positive, reliable and pleasant way, offering advice, answering questions or handling complaints. These are skills that will serve well in virtually any industry. Health and Social Care Recruitment of Apprentices in Southern Health When recruiting new apprentices into the Trust managers should ensure: The person is aged between 16+ Not eligible for an apprenticeship if they hold a degree Employed on a fixed-term contract for months Recruited on the bottom of Band 2 pay scale What would you need to do as an employer? The apprentice must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week You must induct the apprentice and support their on-the-job learning using skills and knowledge in the workforce You must be involved in reviewing the progress of an apprentice You must mentor and line manage the apprentice The Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles in the health and social care fields. As an Apprentice you could work in a variety of fields including those who are elderly, have a learning disability or those with mental health issues. lt will enable the Apprentice to progress to other health and social care related courses and eventually they could choose a profession in nursing. How long is an Apprenticeship? Within Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust we expect a Level 2 Apprenticeship to take one year to complete and a Level 3 Apprenticeship to take 18 months

6 What are the benefits? Gaining a qualification and learning jobspecific skills The apprentice will learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. They will work towards a work-based qualification and other nationally recognised qualifications. Introducing a younger workforce Recruitment of apprentices allows Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust to bring youth and new skills into the Trust on fixed-term contracts whilst enabling the Trust to demonstrate its commitment to meeting national drivers. Support during your Apprenticeship As an employer you will ensure that the apprentice has the appropriate support throughout their learning programme. Your job is to ensure that their training fits their job role satisfying national standards. Each Apprentice will have regular progress reviews which will offer them with support and guidance along the way. It is your opportunity to train young people with new ideas and fewer pre-conceived work methods. The Future The apprentice s career development does not have to stop there. If your budget allows you may wish to keep them on as a permanent member of staff, and they may wish to continue with their professional development.
