4 Learning with us Whatever your circumstances are, we know it can be difficult to fit learning into your life. At learndirect, we want your learning experience to be flexible. Some of our courses and qualifications give you the option to do your learning either at home or in one of our centres around the country. Whichever way you learn you ll get support throughout your learning. How can I learn? In one of our centres If you enrol for your qualification through one of our centres, you ll get face-to-face support from our friendly staff. When learning in a centre, there will be elements of online learning as part of the qualification. You may be able to continue your learning from home, work or anywhere you have an internet connection. During your learning, you ll have regular progress reviews with your tutor at your centre (or by phone or ) to make sure you re on track with your learning. Learning through a centre is flexible, so how long it takes depends on your needs and circumstances. Through our centres you can get a qualification in: life skills, job seeking and work skills everyday skills like maths, English and IT vocational qualifications*. At work If you want to learn on the job, we can help - whether you re in work already or are looking for a job. Apprenticeships are work-based, so you ll earn a salary while you learn. If you don t have a job yet, don t worry - for most subjects we can help you find an employer to do your Apprenticeship with. They re also a great option if you re already in employment and looking to improve your prospects. Apprenticeships are available to anyone aged 16 and over. Most of your learning will be done on the job with some elements of online learning as part of the qualification. Your trainer assessor will support you throughout by visiting you at work, by phone or through interactive online support. Apprenticeships generally take between 12 and 24 months. You can find out more about Apprenticeships on page 17. We offer Apprenticeships in a wide range of industry areas. For more detail, see our full list on page 38. Our Traineeships are perfect if you re aged and want to get the experience to kick start your career and get noticed by an employer. You ll do a placement to give you the skills that employers are looking for and build your confidence for future jobs. You ll also have the chance to develop skills to prepare you for work, or an Apprenticeship, including CV writing, interview techniques, time management and problem solving at work. Our vocational certificates* can be completed more quickly. They re ideal if you re already working, sponsored by an employer or doing voluntary work or a work placement. You ll be assessed on the day-to-day tasks you do at work (or in a work-like setting) and you can complete your learning from home, work, or anywhere you have an internet connection. To make sure you re on track with your learning, you ll have regular progress reviews with your tutor which can be done face-to-face at one of our centres, as well as by phone and . How long it takes depends on your needs and circumstances. On average, it takes around six to nine months to gain a vocational certificate. You can do a vocational certificate with us in a range of subjects, see page 38 for further details. 4 *vocational qualifications are only available at some of our centres

5 Online Whether you choose to learn in a centre or at work, many of our courses have elements of online learning as part of the qualification. This means in most cases you ll be able to continue your learning from home, work, or anywhere you have an internet connection. As you look through this course guide this will be indicated with the online symbol listed next to the qualification title. What will it cost? A lot of our qualifications won t cost you a penny. Depending on what level you will be working towards and your age, your qualification could be funded by the government, or you could be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan. For some qualifications, there might be a charge. See page 34 to find out more. How do I know which qualification is right for me? Before you enrol with us, we ll check which type and level of qualification you should be working towards. If you want to complete a qualification through your job we ll look at what s right with your employer. We ll also check what qualifications and skills you already have, so we can put together the right mix of learning for you. This means you only do the courses you need to - so you don t have to learn what you already know. As well as our funded courses and qualifications, we offer a wide range of short online courses that are available to buy from learndirect.com. 8 Our courses and qualifications Business administration Do you want to understand how a business really works, and develop the skills to use in a huge range of industries? Then gaining a qualification or Apprenticeship in business administration can help you to: increase your performance, productivity and supervisory skills save your business money. Business administration qualifications are really flexible, so even if you don t know what career you want long-term, they ll give you skills which you can use throughout your career and will underpin any role. We have business administration qualifications at different levels, with different ways of learning. Business Administration Certificate* This vocational qualification is great if you re working at an assisting level with a wide range of administrative skills and experience. It s ideal if you re working, sponsored by an employer or doing voluntary work or a work placement. You ll develop skills in: administration information and data handling communication managing performance customer service leadership and management. This qualification is part of the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF), and is like an NVQ Certificate. You ll enrol for your qualification through one of our centres (meaning you get face-to-face support from our friendly staff) and you ll be assessed on the day-to-day tasks you do at work (or in a work-like setting). But you can then continue to learn from home, work, or anywhere you have an internet connection. During your learning, you ll have regular progress reviews with your tutor at your centre (or by phone or ), to make sure you re on track with your learning. I decided doing an Apprenticeship would be a good route to take because it would give me that all important experience employers are looking for. I started an Apprenticeship in business administration at a recruitment company because I thought this might be the type of career I would be interested in. The best thing about doing the Apprenticeship is that now I have completed it I have been offered a full-time position with the company which is brilliant. 10 Our courses and qualifications Childcare High quality care during the early years has a lasting impact on children s future learning and life chances. One of the most valuable resources that children and families have during this time is the staff who support them. With our Childcare Apprenticeships, you ll play a key role in caring for young children and aiding their development. You could work in a nursery, pre-school, school or children s centre. Children and Young People s Workforce Intermediate Apprenticeship and Children s Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) Advanced Apprenticeship* Our Childcare Apprenticeships give you skills to work in a wide range of roles. The Apprenticeship will enable you to assist as a childcare practitioner supporting all areas of children s development. By progressing to the Advanced Apprenticeship you will be able to take on more responsibility both within your team and for the children in your care and you will become a fully-fledged childcare practitioner. Your Apprenticeship will help you to develop the skills you need to maintain children s well-being and provide the best environment for them to grow in all areas: for example, socially and emotionally. You ll learn how to: teach games and exercises organise play co-ordinate group play and activities maintain a safe and happy environment care for and feed children. If you want to develop your career in childcare, these Apprenticeships will provide you with a great starting point for you to begin specialising in a range of areas including early learning and childcare. If you don t have GCSE grade C or above in maths and English you ll need to complete our diagnostic assessment and achieve a minimum percentage to qualify for enrolment for the Early Years Educator Advanced Apprenticeship. 11 Feature All about Traineeships - getting you ready for work Finding a job can be tough, especially if you don t have much work experience. Often employers want people with previous work history, but how do you get this experience in the first place? Less time in the classroom, sroom, more time in the workplace All about Traineeships Our Traineeships give year-olds the opportunity to develop workplace skills and experience, and put you in a better position to compete for an Apprenticeship or job. There s no need to worry, we can help you to take that first step and kick start your career with a Traineeship. Real life work experience and the training you need You ll have the chance to develop the skills that will prepare you for the workplace, including CV writing, interview techniques, time management, problem solving at work and much more. You ll be able to build your confidence with practical work experience. You ll do a placement with a local company to really help you gain the skills that employers are looking for and the confidence that you can use in future employment. Not sure what type of work you d like to do? Don t worry, you can try out different work environments to help you decide what you re most interested in. Do I have to pay anything? Your Traineeship could be funded by the government. We ll discuss this with you before you start and let you know what you need to do. What happens after I complete my Traineeship? You ll now be ready to move onto a full-time paid Apprenticeship, into work or onto further learning! As one of the largest providers of Apprenticeships in the UK, we can help find the right one for you. We ll work with you to search through the available vacancies, fully supporting your applications to find a job to suit you. You ll be able to use the work experience gained in your Traineeship to show employers you have the right skills for the job and that you re ready for the step into long-term employment. 12 Our courses and qualifications Customer service Our customer service qualifications and Apprenticeships can develop the skills you need to provide excellent customer service, and can be applied to hundreds of job roles across different industries - which is great if you re still undecided about your future career. A qualification or Apprenticeship in customer service can help you to: make the right impression with customers get a better understanding of what your customers really want build confidence and a sense of achievement. We have customer service qualifications at different levels, with different ways of learning. Introduction to Customer Service* This qualification will help you to understand the roles within the customer service industries. You will learn: how to deal with queries and requests from customers how to communicate confidently with customers the importance of your appearance and behaviour when working in customer service legislation, regulation and procedures to follow in different roles and industries. You ll enrol for your qualification through one of our centres, meaning you get face to face support from our friendly staff. You will practise customer service situations through various activities and role play. You will be assessed by building up a portfolio of evidence from the activities you ll take part in throughout the course. The Introduction to Customer Service takes about four days to complete. 14 Our courses and qualifications Dental nursing Are you looking to get into dental nursing? Or maybe you re looking to get qualified? Since 2008 dental nurses have to hold or be working towards a qualification recognised by the General Dental Council (GDC), but there s a shortage of courses leading to qualifications for GDC registration. That s where we can help - our Dental Nursing Advanced Apprenticeship is accepted for registration with the GDC. A Dental Nursing Apprenticeship can lead to exciting job prospects too! Research* carried out in the dentistry sector shows that demand for dental nurses is expected to rise with an estimated 48,000 full time dental nurses needed by You could be working in doctors surgeries, hospitals, the armed forces or working with the community. You can also go on to further training to become a hygienist, dental therapist or orthodontic therapist. Whether you re just starting out, or you re in dental nursing but now need your qualification, we can help. Dental Nursing Advanced Apprenticeship You ll learn how to assist your dental team with: preparing instruments and materials for various treatments production of dental images managing oral health diseases and dental procedures providing information and support in the protection of oral health support for the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery assessing oral health and treatment planning. 15 English Our courses and qualifications Do you need an English qualification to improve your CV, get into college/further education or improve your chances of getting a job? If so, we can help. We understand that English skills are part of our everyday lives. If you need help writing your CV, completing a job application form or understanding what a leaflet is telling you, then gaining our nationally recognised English qualifications can help. English Awards Functional Skills in English We ll help you gain the essential skills you need to make communicating easier at work and at home, and you will receive a nationally recognised City & Guilds qualification. You ll cover subjects such as: reading writing grammar and punctuation spelling vocabulary speaking and listening. You can also do different sized qualifications at some level, depending on your learning needs. This could mean your qualification might only need to cover a few subjects like spelling or writing. Or you may need to focus on a broader range of English subjects. You ll enrol for your qualification through one of our centres, meaning you get face-to-face support from our friendly staff. You may be able to complete some of your learning from home, work, or anywhere you have an internet connection. During your learning, you ll have regular progress reviews with your tutor at your centre (or by phone or ) to make sure you re on track with your learning. Our English award will help you apply your English skills in a practical way. It s assessed through coursework, and once you ve finished all your courses and completed your tasks and activities, your work will be assessed by City & Guilds to gain your qualification. Alternatively, by taking the functional skills route, you will take an exam. Your tutor will help you with practice test activities to make sure you re prepared. Exams are taken when you re ready, so you don t have to wait for a specific date. Learning with us is flexible, so how long it takes to gain your English qualification depends on your needs and circumstances. 16 Our courses and qualifications Financial services If you want to work in a bank or building society branch, or financial products call centre, our qualifications are a great way in to the financial services sector. Providing Financial Services - Banking Apprenticeships Intermediate and Advanced Focusing on work in a bank or building society, call centre or remote financial services site, your responsibilities will include creating and maintaining customer accounts, operating currency tills and counter services and handling payments. You will learn how to develop: your knowledge and understanding of the financial services sector from a legal and regulatory perspective and how to respond to complaints your skills in providing information to customers and managing business relationships with clients. If you do the Advanced Apprenticeship, you have the opportunity to do a professional qualification through the Institute of Financial Services (IFS), the Certificate in Retail Banking Conduct of Business (CertRBCB ) as part of your Apprenticeship. Providing Financial Services General Insurance Intermediate Apprenticeship Ideal for those who assess, investigate and settle insurance claims, broking and underwriting straightforward risks. This will include handling and processing new business, renewals and mid-term amendments, including the processing of documentation. You could become an underwriting or brokering administrator or claims official. You will learn how to develop: your knowledge and understanding of the financial services sector from a legal and regulatory perspective and the different products and services skills to process and handle different types of claims your customer service and communication skills. The Advanced Apprenticeship is aimed at those who deal with more complex investigations, claims handling, underwriting new risks and sales of general insurance, with an element of decision making which is high risk. Aimed at team leaders, technical underwriters and higher mandate insurance processors. Our Financial Services Apprenticeships are work-based. 33 Warehousing Our courses and qualifications If you re looking to become a warehouse operative, stock controller, dispatcher or another role within the warehousing industry, this recognised course will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to apply for these jobs. Certificate in Warehousing and Storage Principles* Our Warehouse qualification will provide you with an introduction to different aspects of working in a warehouse environment. You will learn: about supply chain, the importance of warehouses and how to receive goods effective stock control methods, understanding stock range including how to check availability and offer alternatives different loading methods, lifting equipment and manual handling basics health and safety access control and procedures to manage security how to work effectively in a team. You ll enrol for your qualification through one of our centres, meaning you get face to face support from our friendly staff. The course will take around five days to complete. 34 Will I have to pay? Will I have to pay? A lot of our courses and qualifications won t cost you a penny. Depending on what level you want to work towards and your age, your qualification could be funded by the government or you could be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan. For some qualifications, there might be a charge. If you are learning in one of our centres: thanks to government funding, these courses are free for most learners. This includes our maths, English, life skills, job seeking and employability skills as well as some IT qualifications. Advanced Learning Loans We work in partnership with other training organisations to offer a number of courses and qualifications at level 3 and 4 which can be paid for using a Advanced Learning Loan. These include an hair, beauty, personal training and fitness instruction courses. If you are learning at work: your learning and qualification will probably be free, thanks to government funding, but you or your employer may be asked to contribute.
