It is designed to prepare students for careers in governments and their institutions and similarly in non -governmental organisations, the private sector, international and regional institutions. Students will be exposed to debates in literature, research issues and developments in international studies. The programme is tailored to ensure that students possess an understanding of the complexity of international studies. Subsequently, the programme is unique and tailor made to suit the international developments. It is thus set to meet the discipline and sector requirements. 2.0 Objectives Acquaint students with both theoretical and practical knowledge of key issues in international studies Create and improve knowledge of students working in various aspects of international system Create a pool of well trained students to serve national, regional and international sectors Train and equip students for future leadership positions Impart knowledge that will enable students serve both in governmental and non governmental institutions Prepare students for further studies Lay a firm foundation in international studies 3.0 Admission requirements a) Candidates must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements. b) Subject to regulation (a) above, eligible candidates for the Bachelor of Arts in International Page 1 of 13

2 Studies shall be: i. KCSE with a mean grade of C+ and a minimum of C in English. ii. EACE Division III and a credit pass in English and a diploma from a recognized institution iii. KCSE C plain with a minimum of C in English and a diploma from a recognised institution iv. KCSE with C with a minimum of C in English and a certificate and a diploma from a recognised institution. v. A level certificate with at least two Principal Passes or vi) University degree or its equivalent recognized by the Senate 4.0 Exemption from Courses 1. Exemptions will be considered on their own merit, but shall not exceed one-third (1/3 rd ) of the total number of courses required for the degree programme. 2. Exemption from studying any course unit shall be based on evidence of course content having been covered adequately. 3. Exemptions shall be governed by university regulations for the time being enforced 5.0 Course Structure and Duration a. All candidates registered for the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies degree programme must study and pass all the Sixteen (16) IDIS core courses including Four (4) core common university courses in the first and second year. b. There shall be one core unit in each semester of the third and fourth year. Students are therefore required to choose sixteen (16) electives during their third and fourth years of study c. In the third year, students shall take two core units and eight electives; in the fourth year during the first semester students will take four core units ( two core units and a research project which is equivalent to 2 course units). Subsequently, students shall in their second semester take two core units and three electives. d. All candidates shall do a research project during the Fourth year (equivalent to two course units). e. To be awarded the degree, students must study and pass in total of 32 course units. f. The programme shall run for a minimum of eight semesters and a maximum of sixteen semesters 6.0 Examinations Regulations a) The Common University of Nairobi examination regulations shall apply. b) Candidates shall sit for examinations at the end of each semester. Candidates must attend the prescribed courses of study in accordance with University regulations and those of the Institute, Page 2 of 13

3 before being permitted to sit for examinations. c) A candidate shall NOT be permitted to sit an examination unless he/she has attended a minimum of seventy five percent prescribed courses of study in accordance with University of Nairobi regulations. d) All end-of-semester examinations shall consist of a Two-hour written paper for each course unit taken in the semester. e) Examinations shall consist of 70% and Course work shall constitute 30% of the total marks in a given unit. f) The pass mark shall be 40% for each unit. Grades are as follows: %= A 60-69% = B 50-59% = C 40-49% = D 0-39% = Fail g) A candidate who when the unit is next offered. A candidate who fails in the resit shall be allowed a second resit. A candidate who fails in the second resit, must retake the unit. h)a re sit examination shall be graded out of 100 marks i)a candidate who fails any unit with a mark of 0-29% shall retake the unit j) A candidate who fails more than three units in any one semester shall be discontinued. 7.0 Award of Degree Page 3 of 13

4 1) A candidate who has registered for, attended lectures, sat and passed examinations in all the prescribed course units shall be qualified for the award of the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. 2) A candidate may register and pay to audit course units during his/her degree programme. The audited courses must be clearly stated during registration and candidates may only take one (1) such course unit per semester, which shall be indicated as Audited Successfully (AS). 3) Audited courses shall not be considered when calculating the cumulative average score for the award of the B.A. International Studies degree. 4) At the end of the course, the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies degree shall be based on MEAN average for the entire course constituting the cumulative average score as follows: 5) The Bachelor of Arts Degree in international studies shall be classified as follows: % = First Class Honours 60-69% = Upper Second Class Honours 50-59% = Lower Second Class Honours 40-49% = Pass 0-39% = Fail 6) The degree will have specialisation option in the following areas: Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies (International Relations) Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies (International Conflict Management) Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies (International Law) Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies (Diplomacy) Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies (International Economics) Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies (Security Studies) A student is required to be registered in and pass 10 of the respective specialisation option units plus a project paper in the third and fourth years.
