The Biogas System

Crop residue Food waste Livestock Manure Sewage Energy crops Seaweed Prickly pear Feedstocks POME

But we waste an enormous amount of food Source: FAO 1.3 bn tons thrown away each year, land area equivalent to the size of China is used to grow wasted food

Food Waste and climate change

Untreated food waste, environmental impactsair, soil, water, diseases in 70% of the world

The Global Waste Management Outlook report with UNEP, 2015 First worldwide report on global trends in waste management Highlights the challenges and opportunities Looks at cost of inaction V cost of action Lays down indicators for a pathway to sustainable waste management 8

Waste management is an essential utility service Public health priority Extend municipal solid waste collection to 100% of the urban population High Moon Environmental priority Achieve 100% controlled disposal Eliminate open dumping and burning

Collection coverage (%) Current status: collection coverage Developing countries have made significant progress since the 1990s, when average collection coverage was around 50% 2012 data for selected cities 2 billion people with no collection

Current status: controlled disposal Developing countries have made significant progress since the 1990s, when controlled disposal rates were often 0% 2012 data for selected cities 3 billion people - no controlled disposal

Benefits of waste management Waste management has strong linkages to a range of other global challenges: e.g. climate change poverty reduction food and resource security sustainable consumption and production. Waste management is an integral part of the Post Development Agenda

Public health impacts of uncollected waste Gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, particularly in children Blocked drains aggravate floods and spread infectious disease Costs of inaction - 1 High Moon Environmental impacts of open dumping and burning Severe land pollution and freshwater, groundwater and sea pollution Local air pollution and climate change

Costs to society exceed the financial costs per capita of proper waste management by a factor of 5-10 Health care Lost productivity Flood damage Damage to businesses and tourism Costs of inaction - 2 High Moon Data are scarce But evidence is clear Need to act now, rather than waiting for ever for perfect information

Lack of waste infrastructure means open dumping 80% of marine litter comes from here 15

The Jevons Paradox and contradictions in our global economic system after economist William Stanley Jevons. In 1885 Jevons observed that technological advances in the efficient use of coal actually resulted in its increased consumption, rather than the reverse. This paradox was a consequence of the relative cost of using coal coming down, making it more accessible to consumers, which in turn increased its demand and overall consumption. Is food just too cheap?

17

Population and consumption increases but commodities decrease in value

Food price inflation runs at 2.6% p.a. average since

Food waste is critical to the whole waste management system globally

A good reason for recycling food waste

In the UK too

We need a rapid, global step change in soil protection

What if food waste became a valuable feed stock? Will we be competing in ten years time to get food waste? EU Funded Horizon 2020 project: RES URBIS, Food waste innovation and horizons

Financial support by EU Horison 2020 Programme under Grant Agreement is gratefully aknowledged

Taking our international commitments too lightly

Time running out to meet the climate targets

World Bank Carbon pricing Map 2015

We subsidise fossil fuels 4X more than renewables Source : IEA

Some conclusions to leave you with 1. We are running out of time very fast to reduce climate change catastrophe. Our soils are deteriorating fast too. 2. We make commitments we have no intention of respecting 3. The food system is critical to human life yet presents inherent contradictions (waste, water use, distribution, obesity, starvation, GHG emissions, soil erosion, pollution, chemicals) 4. Are resources simply too cheap? 5. The international mechanism of pricing in externalities through carbon pricing could bring more equilibrium, but at a cost 6. Can we afford not to act?

A little publicity to end
