BACKGROUND EEA Report European waters - Assessemnt of status and pressure 2018: - 25 % of EU groundwater bodies (by area) have poor chemical status - Nitrates are the predominant pollutants, causing failure in 18% of groundwater bodies ( by area). - Pesticides are another major source, causing failure in 6.5% of groundwater bodies (by area).
Innovative tools enabling drinking WATER PROTECTion in rural and urban environments Objective: Contribute to effective uptake and realisation of management practices and mitigation measures to protect drinking water resources Action! In local action labs across EU (BE, IE, DK, IT, ES, PL, RO) New governance: alternative financing Share data: participatory monitoring Best management into practice Bring information close to actor using ICT Upscale findings from action labs to other regions Advise policy makers: WFD, CAP, nitrate and pesticide directives Strategic communication to stakeholders and dissemination to the public
VAL TIDONE ACTION LAB Location: Tidone Valley north-west of Italy in Emilia Romagna Region, Province of Piacenza; part of Tidone River catchment, Lora-Carogna catchment and Carona-Boriaco catchment Km 2 covers five municipalities: Ziano Piacentino, Castel San Giovanni, Nibbiano Piacentino, Pianello and Borgonovo Val Tidone; hilly area with elevations ranging between 100 and 350 m above sea level; main culture is the vineyard, with 2941 ha in 2016; 455 farms: vineyard with cellar (40%) and vineyard without cellar (60%).
ARPAE NITRATES HISTORICAL DATA ( )
VAL TIDONE ACTION LAB Action Lab leader Specific objective: determinate the contribution of grape cultivation on the general contamination of groundwater by pesticides and nitrates 175 farmers from Ziano Piacentino (50.3 %) Nibbiano Piacentino (16%), Castel San Giovanni (9.7%), Pianello (6.9%), Borgonovo Val Tidone (4.6%) and other regions and municipaltities (12.5). Project Partner Project Partner
No Leader for Water Management
VAL TIDONE ACTION LAB SURVEY CAMPAIGN Survey campaign involving 175 farmers (38 % of total farmers in the area) to characterise the territory, the agricultural techniques in use and evaluate farmer s knowledge on water protection: Area of vineyards (total : 64% < 10 ha, 25 % between 11 and 39 ha, 7. 5% > 40 ha, 3,5 % didn t give an answer; Existence and use of groundwater wells on vineyard: more than 100 groundwater wells present, used for irrigation (18%), drinking water (8%), treatments (pesticides solution, 70%) and no use (4%); Use of Nitrogen base fertilizers: 70 % of famers use Nitrogen base fertilizers in vineyards ( 13% -organic N fertilization);
VAL TIDONE ACTION LAB SURVEY CAMPAIGN Use of pesticides: < 10 treatments/ year (88% of 170 farmers): 91% use fungicides, 75% use insecticides and 29% use herbicides; Actions to prevent water contamination: 94% take actions Integrated pest management 45% Existence of dedicated areas for sprayers washing and waste water recovery 39% Presence of buffer strips 58% Storage and disposal of pesticides within lockable rooms/containers 90% Participation to training courses to prevent water contamination: 64% follow training courses (license for pesticides use) Aware about the existence of pesticides and nitrates monitoring data in surface and groundwater in Val Tidone (ex: ARPAE website): 83% are not aware, while 14% get information from farmer s associations and change of opinions at local market

CONCLUSIONS Existence of a leader for water management will improve the adoption and the implementation of new strategies for water governance; Presence of nitrates and pesticides over the legal limits in groundwater of Tidone Valley; Upstream-downstream criteria must be adjusted based on the monitoring results obtained; Integration of monitoring results with information from the territory is required in order to understand the drivers of the contamination; this will help in implementing BMP and MM for groundwater quality improvement.
