4 Page 4 EAST TORRANCE DISTRICT NEWS The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is a federal agency that works hand-inhand with the people of New Mexico to improve and protect America s natural resources. For more than seventy five years, NRCS and its predecessor agencies worked in close partnerships with farmers, ranchers, local and state governments, non-profit agencies and other federal agencies to maintain healthy and productive working landscapes. NRCS New Mexico works closely with local soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs) -- and from a panoramic landscape approach, with the New Mexico Association of Conservation Districts -- to ensure conservation is successfully implemented throughout the state. NRCS assists landowners with conservation planning and implementation with an understanding of how natural resources relate to each other as well as to all of us and how our actions affect those resources. NRCS is a forward-thinking agency, recognizing the issues of today and at the forefront of helping solve the challenges of tomorrow. In the beginning the focus was on the soil. Now NRCS responds to the broader scope that encompasses soil, water, air, plants, and animals (SWAPA) as well as energy on America's private lands. When you drink water and eat food you benefit from the work of NRCS and its partners. The benefits translate beyond a landscape and in to rural communities. While farmers and ranchers remain the primary customers of NRCS, the agency also provides technical assistance to city planners, watershed groups, state and local governments, and civic organizations. Funds to implement conservation practices are available through Farm Bill programs that share the cost of conservation with the farm, ranch, watershed, and community. These voluntary programs help local people improve land stewardship on working cropland and rangeland, conserve water supplies, enhance wildlife habitat, preserve high-quality farmland, protect native plants and animals, and improve stream conditions. NRCS programs also provide upstream flood prevention, emergency watershed protection, urban conservation, and local community assistance projects designed to improve social, economic, and environmental conditions. As a result of our voluntary technical and financial assistance, land managers and communities take a comprehensive approach to the use and protection of natural resources in rural, urban, and developing areas. Conservation easement programs, also in the Farm Bill, provide long-term options. NRCS helps New Mexico and the nation balance economic goals with environmental needs, ensuring sustainable, productive lands that supply food, fiber, forest products, and energy for all citizens. For additional information contact your local NRCS office, local conservation district, or visit NRCS on the web at: (505)
