4 5. Building Grass It will be a challenge to build grass this August and September. There is only 1/2 bag of CAN left to spread on this farm (Nitrates Directive Rules) between now and the middle of September. This year very little second cut was made and it was taken as bales earlier (Mid July), compared to previous years. This was a good decision as the after grass was back in the system earlier. There are plenty of high quality surplus bales that will be fed to slow down the rotation to build grass. We don t want to end up grazing grass covers of >2,000 kg DM/Ha in late September and October so that s why we don t want to let the cover/cow to go higher than 400 Kg Dm/lu in September or October. Previously, we found that grazing these covers can be difficult if it s wet and they can be slower growing over the winter. The stocking rate will be reduced from 2.5 to 2.25 cows /ha from September. We will sell not in calf cows and later calving cows. 6. Key Notes All milking cows (305) are at grass full time, they are on grass only (208kg/cow fed to date compared to 400 kg/cow in the same period last year). Cows got Lepto and BVD vaccine on 4-April. Maiden heifers have got their 2 nd shot of BVD and Lepto (19-Mar). Cows got their annual booster for IBR on the 24-April and the heifers got their booster on the 23-April. This year they were done before the breeding season. Breeding heifer calves got their live shot of IBR (3-Jun). The new leased land (8ha) will be grazed by the milking cows this week (5- July) for the first time. These two paddocks are next to the milking parlour. This was reseeded on the 19-April with 1 variety in each paddock (monoculture: Astonlord and Aberwolfe). Grass seeds were sprayed for leather jackets Monday 12-May. It has got 4 bags of /acre at sowing and 1 bag of CAN/acre in Mid-May. Reseeds were sprayed for weeds and thistles on 28-May. Milk Liners were changed (10-Jun). 7. Key Recommendations this week 2-Sept-2014 Today s average farm cover was 965kg Dm/ha or 378kg Dm/lu. The farm is on target for building grass. Forecasting lower than average growth rates (as a result of the low Nitrogen application) so far 73 bales were fed. We have stopped feeding bales since the weekend as we are on target for grass supply for now. Building Grass- See no. 4 for building grass. Order Salmonella vaccine for September for cows. Heifers will require 2 shots (Booster). Planning to scan cows next week or week after. Not in calf cows will be sold after scanning.
