3 Vision and aims of the project LONG-TERM VISION Build an exclusive community of leaders from South Africa and Italy to reinforce the strategic relationship between the two countries and exploit new opportunities, particularly in Sub Saharan countries 2014 OBJECTIVES 1. Set up a highlevel Summit exclusively for leaders from South Africa and Italy 2. Emphasize opportunities for South African and Italian businesses 3. Provide South African and Italian leaders with innovative ideas to shape their strategies 3

Sub-Saharan Africa is booming +6% GDP growth on average in the last decade, +80% of middle class by 2020, 4x household final consumption from South Africa is a strategic hub Leading economy in Africa with the most developed infrastructural system, #2 emerging investing market in the world, #2 most integrated country (among the BRICS) in global value chains 3. Industrial systems of South Africa and Italy are complementary Strong manufacturing (>12% GDP), specialization on mediumtechnology processes and products, strong presence of SMEs 4

9 Opportunities in Manufacturing SSA requires products with improved standards and industrialization Italy has world-class SMEs in the machinery, plant and equipment sectors which are looking for partners to grow abroad South Africa and Italy have several complementary value chains A. Plants in South Africa for producing machinery, plant and equipment for key sectors (food, housing, textile, health, etc.) B. Joint ventures for installing plants in other SSA countries C. Joint Italy-South Africa clusters in SA to produce automotive components (to be integrated into SA s assembly sector), textile and fashion, furniture (with high design content) 9
10 Opportunities in Agroindustry Food demand will grow exponentially in Sub Saharan Africa Food security is an issue throughout SSA Agroindustry is key to development A. Public/private funded integrated agro-industrial parks in Sub- Saharan Africa (for local production and export) B. Joint ventures between South African and Italian universities for sharing know-how and competences (focus: food security, seed and fertilizers, water management and irrigation, farm equipment, GMOs) C. Task force to adapt the Italian cooperative model to South Africa 10
11 Opportunities in Energy Energy is a key driver for economic, industrial and social development of SSA South Africa is planning to build 42.3 GW by 2030 (doubling current capacity) Sub-Saharan Africa s energy gap worth $50 bn per year; SADC* members alone are expected to invest more than US$200 bn in the next 15 years A. JV to produce systems for distributed energy generation to be sold in Sub-Saharan African countries B. JV for the deployment (starting from South Africa) of smart grids and active grid management C. Cooperation agreement at university-level in the field of energy efficiency, training of technicians, training of off-grid communities (*) Southern African Development Community 11
