5 I KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA, RAMANAGARA in the milieu 1.1 KVK and its Mandates: Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with the objective of improving the human resources in agricultural sector, transfer of agricultural technologies and the overall development came out with the mandate of establishing one KVK for every district in the country. It was realized during the course of implementation of the scheme of KVK that the vocational training only would not be useful unless it is followed up with frontline demonstrations in the farmer s field in order to demonstrate the production potentialities of agricultural technologies. KVK in the district of Ramanagara was established at Chandurayanahally village of Magadi Taluk during April KVK is located about 5 Kms away from Magadi in Magadi-Kunigal road. This Kendra will impart learning through work-experience. Following are the main mandates of KVK 1. Conducting on-farm testing to identify the location specificity of agricultural technologies under various farming systems 2. Organizing frontline demonstrations to establish production potential of various crops and enterprises on the farmers fields 3. Organizing need based training of farmers to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technologies related to technology assessment, refinement and demonstration, and training of extension personnel to orient them in the frontier areas of technology development. 4. Creating awareness about improved technologies to larger masses through appropriate extension programs 5. Production and supply of good quality seeds and planting materials, livestock, poultry and fishery breeds and products and various bio-products to the farming community. 6. Work as resource and knowledge centre of agricultural technology for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district. Krishi Vigyan Kendra functions in collaboration with line departments testing the latest technologies with a view to reduce the time lag between technology generation and its adoption. KVK verifies the technologies in the socio-economic conditions of the farmers and study the constraints in production as well as to modify the technologies to suit to local conditions. Keeping in view the mandate, KVK follow the principle of learning by doing.

6 A farm land of acres is maintained by KVK in which demonstration units on Agriculture and allied aspects like are being established. The Kendra has also undertaken vermicompost demonstrations that are used to create awareness to needy farmers. 1.2 General Information: Name and address of KVK with phone fax and mail Name and address of the Host Organization with phone, fax and e- mail Name of the Programme Coordinator Residence phone No 4 Year of Sanction : 5 Year of start of activities : 6 Area : 7 Major farming systems/enterprises 8 Name of Agro climatic Zone : 9 Soil type : : : : : Chandurayanahally, Kalya Post, Magadi kvkramanagara@gmail.com University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK Campus, Bangalore PIN , Karnataka State / / vc@uasbangalore.edu.in Dr. K. 7 1.3 Agro-Climatic Zone and Farming Situation in the District: Ramanagara district falls under zone-v (Eastern Dry zone). It is situated in Deccan plateau with 80% area having an altitude of 800 to 900 meters above MSL. It is primarily agrarian in character with about 47 per cent of its geographic area under agriculture and allied crops. The zone is essentially a dry farming zone. The livelihood of a large proportion of the population therefore, depend upon the way in which rainfed is managed. The district is essentially a dry farming district. The livelihoods of a large proportion of the population therefore, depend upon the way in which rainfed farming is managed. The district receives an annual rainfall of 874 mm received in 49 rainy days. The duration of the monsoon, however, seems to be shrinking with the first three months in the year receiving very little rainfall in recent times. The rainfall distribution has two peaks, one during May and another during September. It is characterized by erratic and uneven distribution. Predominantly the tube wells/ bore wells are the major source of irrigation in the district except in Kanakapura and Channapatna Taluk where canal irrigation is available for 2000 and 117 ha respectively. There are about 38,002 ha of land being irrigated through borewells.
