6 SELAMAT objectives The overall aim: To establish a permanent virtual platform on food safety and to stimulate economic relations between regions This platform aims to: Promote European and Asian collaboration Contributing to opening up the European Research Area Mobilise the European and Asian Research Communities to support Communities and Asian foreign and development policies Develop an action-oriented agenda for ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting S & T (Science & Technology) cooperation on food safety for conventional and GMO products Promote ways and means of effective networking, targeted continuing S & T dialogue

7 SELAMAT activities: Set up the network, research growth in partnerships, where a solid participation of the Scientific Community, Political Bodies, Consumer and Producers Associations and Industry and Retail Organisations is embedded particularly well, organise one workshop per year, organise one course on food safety per year, set up a structure for a database for analytical methods, evaluate the food safety research agenda in an international perspective.

19 Proposed new SSA: Global Food Safety Platform Objectives To bring together and coordinate global initiatives/research in the area of Food Safety. To promote implementation of new knowledge in this area. To initiate training programs and to stimulate training. To analyze current Food Safety systems and to identify shortcomings. To initiate joint research activities to fill in the gaps identified. To stimulate exchange of information in regard to Food Safety (i.e. early warning, joint databases) and dissemination.

20 Proposed scheme for new SSA: Global Food Safety Platform General activities needed to build such platform (SSA activity): 1. Define the niche, structure, tasks, and way of operation WP on management / structure: address questions like: who should be involved, what should be the structure, how to become sustainable, what are the common interests/ shared vision, what activities should be deployed, etc 2. Design and develop a training plaza WP on training; develop a training plaza where demand and needs find each other 3. Develop a research agenda Aspects to consider: legal aspects, emerging risks/ early warning, food safety analysis, quantitative risk assessment (maybe also determine the need to cooperate in these area and how [desk studies]) 4.
