3 The Need for Upland Agriculture Extension Urgent need to reverse effects of destructive cultivation in sloping lands leading to massive soil erosion within the watersheds. Sustainable technologies for food sustenance and income needs of the upland households. Mechanism for timely & systematic delivery of agriculture services.
4 Features of Upland Agriculture Extension Service delivery to upland farming household focused on: Farm diversification Conservation and protection of sloping farmlands Outputs: Sustainable productivity (better production) Profitability (more income)
5 Who are the Upland Extensionists? 1. The LGU Agricultural Technicians (ATs)assigned in the 4 barangays in the 30 municipalities. Ø 2. Barangay Extension Workers (BEWs) recruited by the Barangay Local Government to assist the ATs 3. Farmer Training Groups composed of 4 farmer specialists together with the BEW based at the barangay. 4.Model Farm Cooperator selected by the community, LGUs and partner institutions for demonstration of the diversified farming system model.

11 Is a volunteer farmer recruited by the Barangay LGU and trained as a paratechnician to disseminate upland farming technologies in the Barangay.
12 As a Barangay Extension Worker, he/she shall report to the Punong Barangay, assist the AT, and shall have the following tasks: 1. Establish and maintain his/her own Diversified Farming System (DFS) Model Farm 2. Facilitate at least five farmers per sitio to establish their DFS model farm. 3. Coordinate closely with the ATs, UBAs and UCOs in the delivery of extension services. 4. Participate in regular meetings of the Barangay 5. Agriculture Committee and report progress of activities.
13 1. Monthly honorarium either from the Barangay,Municipal or Provincial LGUs. 2. Trainings/Seminars, Field Exposures 3. Farm Tools, Extension Kit, Budding Knife Reading/reference materials, Veterinary Kits, 4. PhilHealth Insurance (LGU), 5. Inputs for his DFS farm
14 Network of Volunteer Paratechnicians led by BEW recruited at 1 per sitio by the UBA. Facilitate technology dissemination through farmer to farmer coaching Assist/augment AT services in the sitio level Trained core group of local resource persons for their specialized expertise e.g. on crops, livestock, fisheries and Land Care approaches. FTG serves as the training team of the UBA
15 FTG members are priority recipients of: Trainor s trainings/, seminars, intensive coaching by technicians and participation to exposure trips DFS inputs e.g. planting materials They can collect honorarium/fees for services rendered as resource persons/paratechnicians They can be also prioritized for dispersal, demofarm activities and other LGU programs.
16 1 site per Barangay managed by the UBA and run by the model farm cooperator and Farmer Training Group which serves as a: Venue for community level trainings,farmer field schools, and cross visits/field trips Showcase for various upland farming technologies and Land Care. Demonstration farm, research site and plant propagation area.
17 Establish at least 5 model farms per Sitio and at least 20 farms at the Barangay level showcasing benefits of integrated, diversified land use appropriate in sloping land within a 1 hectare area per farmer. Shows upland agriculture can be technically feasible, economically viable, environmentally friendly, socially and culturally acceptable.
18 STEPS AND COMPONENTS TOWARDS DFS Set up farm using grass strips/nvs or contoured hedgerow as SWC + Cash Crops Enriched and Improved farm SWC +Cash Crops + Annual Crops Developed farm with SWC +Cash Crops + Annual Crops + Long Term Crops
19 Assumptions: An allocation of P 3,000 worth of inputs/planting materials for every DFS farmer cooperator 4 sitios/barangay; 4 bgys./municipality covered Sitio Level- 5 DFS Farmers- P 15, Barangay Level- 20 DFS Farmers- P 60, Municipal Level- 80 DFS Farmers- P240,000.00
