This project is based on an assignment which was given to course participants and supervised by Dr. Abdel Rahman El Gamal as a part of Fish Development Training course. This annual course is organized by the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture - Egypt (EICA). The names of the team members who developed this project as well as their countries are shown in the following slide 2010

Ghana is located in the western part of Africa and shares boundary with Togo on the eastern side, Burkina Faso on the northern side, cote D Ivoire on the western and the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic ocean on the southern side. The population of Ghana is 22 million people. The total land area is 238,837square kilometers and has the largest man-made lake with the surface area of 8,502 sq. km, which covers about 3.6% of the total land area of Ghana.
The per capita consumption of fish in the country is 25kg pre annum Kumasi the project site, which is the second largest city in Ghana with the population of over 4million people, is situated in the southern part of the country and about four hours drive away from the capital city Accra. Kumasi falls within the tropical rain forest and has two main seasons, the major season and the minor season.

The choice of Kumasi as the project site cannot be over emphasized. The city is situated in the tropical rain forest and due to the geographical location, animal production such as cattle, which serve as source of animal protein cannot be under taken because of the presence of tsetse fly which are normally found at these ecological zone. The populates therefore depend on poultry products heavily but the recent scare of HINI and swine flu has really put preasure on fish and fish products thereby increasing the price of fish and fish products. There is also permanent source of water and power which can supply the needed amount to the project. African catfish is selected because it is a delicacy and readily accepted by the people in this region. Its ease of processing is also a reason why this species is so much preferred. Farmers who are in to aquaculture in and around Kumasi do not have enough fingerlings for stocking.
The existence of large numbers of fish farms in and around Kumasi metropolis will also benefit from this project through the availability of catfish fingerlings. The project will also assist the feed mills that are situated in the Kumasi metropolis with by- products, for manufacturing of fish feed for farm use. The brood stock will be acquired from the wild because the river at the selected site has a lot of this species, which can easily be acquired for the project. Artificial hatchery technology would be used because it is easy to get result.
There is a large suitable land for this project which would be acquired on outright term. There is a permanent source of water, that is a river which has no conflict of use, and free from effluent contamination. Three acres of land will be needed for the project. The project would be sited 100 meters off the Accra-Kumasi main trunk road and a sign post will be erected showing direction to the farm.
GENERAL OBJECTVE: The general objective of this project is to construct a hatchery facility and produce ten million two hundred thousand (10,200,000) catfish fingerlings in a year. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: The specific objectives of the project are to; Acquire a 3 acres of land for the establishment of a hatchery facility. Acquire resources/facilities and establish a hatchery complex. Acquire 600 catfish brood stock (100 males and 500 females) for fingerling production. Solicit funds from financial institutions. Sell produce at farm gate at reasonable price.
MATERIALS AND METHOD A total of ten million two hundred thousand (10,200,000) cat fish fingerlings at the weight of 10g will be produced in a year, using 500 and 100 females and male brood stocks respectively at the weight of 500g. One million seven hundred thousand(1,700,000) fingerlings will be produced in each production cycle for six (6) times One reservoir of 1,200m 3 would be constructed to hold water for the hatchery.
CONTINUE One administration unit comprising of one small laboratory, store and an office would be constructed and well equipped. Sixteen(16) earthen ponds fitted with water exchange valves of area 250m 2 would be constructed for fry production Four(4) concrete hatching tanks would be constructed One earthen ponds of area 400m 2 would be constructed to hold brood stock.
PREPARATION OF PONDS. Disinfect brood stock pond with liming materials before stocking All incubation and nursing ponds will be disinfected and filled with water and fertilized one week prior to stocking. Organic manure would be applied at the rate of 25kg/250m 2 pond 1kg/N and 0.25kgP 2 O 5 prior to stocking. Brood stock will be selected and stocked in nursery pond and flushed.
Pituitary injection will be carried out to induce final maturation and ovulation (spawning) using prepared homogenate at dosage of 1ml per fish. A female cat fish may be injected with pituitary gland of a catfish (male or female) of equal size. Egg fertilization will be done at the rate of one male to thirty females.(janssen,1985a, de Graaf, 1989). Milt is taken from males and diluted with physiological salt solution (9g of salt dissolved in 1 liter of boiled water) half hour before stripping of the eggs from female, this solution is added and mixed with the eggs thoroughly.
Fertilized eggs are then sent to incubation tanks for hatching. Three days after hatching, larvae are stocked in nursing ponds at rate of 425m 2 (According to Hecht et al.,1988). Feeding starts with natural production in pond followed by powdered formulated feed of 40% protein at rate of 10% body weight for the first two weeks. (Hogendoorn et al.,1983, Janssen J.A.L 1985 Unpublished). The necessary hatchery management practices will be carried out including grading till target size is reached. Daily water renewal of 20% would be carried out. One technician and two labourers would be employed.

Six hundred catfish brood stocks would be purchased to produce a total of 10,200,000 fingerlings at the weight of 10g each within six production cycles in a year. It is also expected that, the fingerlings produced would be sold at the end of each production cycle to enable the farmer recoup all expenditures within the shortest possible time.
