Telephone: or sasta@sugar.org.za * SASTA member price ** Non-SASTA member price SPECIALIST ADVISORY REQUESTS (SARs) SASRI routinely, on behalf of commercial companies, performs investigations into new products to test their efficacy, as well as to facilitate registration where this is required. The overall aim of these investigations is to support the entry of products into the market that will be of significant benefit to the South African sugar industry. These types of investigations can include the testing of herbicides, fungicides, ripeners, nematicides and fertilisers, as well as a range of pest and disease controlling products. SASRI has a Specialist Advisory Request (SAR) Panel whose task it is to assess all requests submitted to SASRI. The route of action for prospective clients to follow is: (1) A formal request for the service is sent to the SASRI Operations Manager ( kerry.redshaw@sugar.org.za) (2) This request is then passed on to the SAR Panel (consisting of four SASRI scientists) who will assess the feasibility of each new SAR as well as determine whether SASRI has the capacity to take it on. (3) If the SAR is feasible and the relevant Specialist has the capacity, the SAR Panel will communicate this to the client together with a contract quote. After completion of the investigation, a detailed Research Report will be prepared. This report will be peer-reviewed by the SAR Panel before submission to the client. SASRI receives a host of advisory requests each year, and experience shows that each advisory request tends to be unique in terms of the design and methodologies required; thus it is not possible to assign generic costs. On acceptance of the quotation, clients are usually required to pay 50% on acceptance of the quote and the remaining 50% once the final report has been received. However, certain situations may warrant alternate arrangements, as agreed upon by both parties. Page 10
