Webinar Index: 1) What is a Fumigation? 2) Goals of Fumigation. 3) Fumigation Options. 4) Expectations of Treatments. 5) Possible New Fumigants. 6) Fumigation Alternatives.
Fumigant Evolution
Disclaimer: 1) Anyone using fumigants in the US must be licensed in the state that they are fumigating in. 2) Pesticide labels are Federal law you must read and follow the fumigant label that you are using. 3) Nothing said in the presentation can supersede a fumigant / pesticide label.
FUMIGATION BASICS What is Fumigation? Use of gas to fill a space. Held at a high enough concentration to kill the target pest. Held for long enough time to kill the pest. Each pest has a Concentration X Time Factor or CT
Fumigation> What do we know about Fumigation? Fumigation is still the only method to kill ALL life stages of the insect. Fumigation is NOT 100% elimination of all pests in a structure. Fumigation gas levels MUST be monitored.
FUMIGATION BASICS Being informed about fumigants. Are Restricted Use Chemicals. Special PPE. Requires gas monitoring (gauge). Fumigants have NO residual effect. Fumigants do not kill 100% of all insects in a commercial treatment. Anyone telling you different is wrong or misleading you.
FUMIGATION BASICS Suitability: Is the commodity in a condition that fumigants can be successful? Excessive Grain Moisture. Damage Age
Grain Fumigation Treatment Choice 6000 Fumigant Efficacy Relationship Concentration (PPM) Phosphine Methyl Bromide Sulfuryl Fluoride

FUMIGATION OPTIONS Sulfuryl Fluoride (Profume )
Pro Fume
FUMIGANT SUITABILITY Can gas be applied to all areas of the grain storage at effective levels? What are the penetration capabilities of each fumigant option?
FUMIGANT SUITABILITY Suitability: How long do you keep the fumigated storage under gas?
Bulk Grain Storage
Bulk Grain Fumigation Over 30 feet of grain depth
Gas Monitoring Most grain fumigations are not monitored for efficacy. Most fumigators do not understand what is required to deliver an effective fumigation.
Lets first understand resistance: Resistance is not immunity Phosphine still kills the insect Not all insects are resistant
New Fumigants Lack of managed applications Magic Bean mentality 100% Efficacy
What is a grain protectant? It is a residual insecticide designed to be applied to grain to prevent insect infestation. They can be found in liquid or dust form. Protectants do not eliminate insect infestation. Misuse could cause residual chemistry to become resistant quickly.
FUMIGATION OPTIONS If you are purchasing fumigant or hiring contract fumigation services we would like for you to consider using Food Protection Alliance.
