Simon Visits the Farm Level H/I by Teresa Clevidence Illustrated by Travis Schaeffer 2013 n2y Unique Learning System Leveled Book, Simon Visits the Farm, Level H/I

1 Every day Simon rides his bike past Uncle Joe s farm. Uncle Joe planted corn seeds in his fi eld. Now little plants are growing. Soon the corn plants will have big green leaves. Every day Simon watches the plants grow bigger.

2 Simon knows about plants. A plant is a producer. Plants can make their own food. Plants use the Sun, air and water to help them grow. Uncle Joe is happy when there are many sunny days. He is also happy when it rains. His corn plants need the Sun and the rain.

3 Uncle Joe uses corn from last year to feed his cows. Simon knows cows are consumers. Cows cannot make their own food. They need plants for food.

4 During the day, Uncle Joe puts his cows in the grassy fi eld. Grass is also a producer. Grass makes its own food. Cows are the consumers and eat the grass. Some days rabbits come to the grassy fi eld too. The rabbits are consumers and eat the grass for food.

5 Simon likes to ride his bike by Uncle Joe s farm early in the morning. He stops to watch Uncle Joe milk the cows. The milk goes into big trucks and then off to a factory. The factory gets the milk ready to go to the grocery store. Simon likes to drink milk.

6 Simon knows about people. People are consumers too. People cannot make their own food. People can drink milk from a cow. When people get food from other consumers, like cows, they are called secondary consumers.

7 In the middle of the summer, Simon rides his bike past Uncle Joe s farm. The corn is ready to be picked. Simon stops to help Uncle Joe pick the corn. Simon remembers that the corn plants are producers. The plants make their own food and use the Sun and rain to help them grow. The corn plants grew very tall with big green leaves. They also grew large ears of new corn seed.

8 At lunchtime, Uncle Joe asks Simon to stay and eat with the family. On the table are big hot yellow ears of corn. Simon remembers that people are consumers. And people can eat corn for food. Simon eats the corn and drinks a big glass of milk. People need plants and animals too. Simon learns a lot about producers and consumers from Uncle Joe s farm.

yes Simon Visits the Farm no plant grow Simon Uncle Joe farm corn seed make use plant producer food Sun air feed / eat drink water rain cow consumer grass pick rabbit milk people secondary consumer Within each category, pictures are listed from left to right in the order in which they appear in the text n2y Unique Learning System Leveled Book, Simon Visits the Farm, Level H/I
