2 Belo Horizonte Belo Horizonte - BH: Capital of Minas Gerais and the 4 th biggest capital of Brazil State of Minas Gerais: the third economy of Brazil 2,412,937 habitants (IBGE. 2007) Weather seasoned Pioneer in Food and Nutritional Security and Urban Agriculture Area: 335 km². No Rural Area (100% urbanized). However, large amounts of available land around the capital (Periurban). Economically active population: 51% (DIEESE, 2000) 18% of the total population in situations of high vulnerability Population in slums: 364,079 (URBEL, 2000) Biome: Atlantic Rainforest in transition to Cerrado (Savannah) Main economical activity: services and industry 9 micro regions

4 History of Urban Agriculture in BH 1991 to to 2000 Projects of the municipality: school vegetable garden, seedling production, solid waste composting: involvement of several secretariats CEVAE Program Centre of Agroecological Agriculture - Partnership between the municipality and the NGO REDE de Intercâmbio de Tecnologias Alternativas (REDE) - Important reference of Urban Agriculture in Brazil, with support from the United Nations. Creation of the Forum for Sustainable Nutrition and Food Security of Minas Gerais and the State Council of Food Security in Minas Gerais to 2004 Urban Agriculture Network of BH (MUAA) envolving civil society
5 1994 to 2010 Municipality: Implementation of Municipal projects: school and community gardens, Pró-Pomar, Centers of Agro ecological Experience (CEVAES). Draft law 274/2009 and law 9.959/10(AU as the 5 th economic activity in BH). Civil Society: Metropolitan Urban Agriculture Association (MUAA), constitution of the Brazilian Forum on Food Security (1998) creation of the Municipal Council for Food Security of the State of Minas Gerais (1999) a 2006 State: establishment of Regional Commissions of Food and Nutritional Security (2002) currently 25. Impact: state budget resources for specific actions of SAN, including actions relating to Urban Agriculture (UA) Law /05. National: Zero Hunger Program Federal Government (2003) The Federal Government begins to co-finance activities of urban agriculture in the municipalities. In 2011, R$ 3.2 million are made available (close to U$ 2 million). Law /06.
6 Challenge for BH Develop and maintain a multi-stakeholder strategic planning (with the public sector and civil society) aimed at making urban agriculture a public policy that contributes to the FNS (Food & Nutritional Security) of the poorest populations of the city.

11 Urban Agriculture Network of Belo Horizonte (UAN-BH) Established on 02/06/2008 Forum for building consensus between government and civil society It is a forum for the participatory management of UA actions, programs and projects, made up of government representatives and civil society The mission is to identify, plan, implement and monitor the strategies of promoting and consolidating UA in BH Current Members: 33 entities
12 Urban Agriculture Network in Belo Horizonte (UAN-BH) Function, Structure and Management Management Group: Coordinates the Work Groups, develops and evaluates the Action Plan - Monthly meetings. - REDE (NGO) /FPM/IPES/SMASAN. Thematic Groups: Executive and operational group responsible for development, study and specific proposals. - Made up of representatives of UAA-BH. - Legislative WG and Events WG. Meetings as necessary for the completion of the projects. Executive Secretary: follows up on the decisions made by the plenary, engages government and civil society stakeholders.
13 Action Plan for Urban Agriculture in BH Planning and management tool. Prepared by the multi-stakeholder forum. Has 6 Strategic Objectives with Operational Objectives and Strategic Actions for the short, medium and long term. 10 year planning horizon- 2008/2018. For the period 2009 to 2011, the Forum implemented actions with a total investment of more than U$800,000. Development of Action Plans very specific to UA. The Model Action Plan, without a specific budget relies on the development of proposed actions by stakeholders in the UA/BH Network and attracting new projects.
