2 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION SYSTEMS Enabling Environment for Agriculture Innovation: economic policy, legal and regulatory environment, institutions, infrastructure, practices, behaviors, and natural resource base, etc. TRIGGERS Private sector: Producers organizations Input suppliers Machinery dealers Traders Agro-industry Banking/insurance co. Facilitation & coordination bodies: NGOs. Producer organizations Cooperatives Advanced farmers Economic price, market cost, value chain, etc. Bio-physical climate change, soils, pests, etc. PPP Public sector: Extension/Education Research Finance Chambers of Commerce Government Commodity associations Advisory services External projects Retailers Etc. Market oriented farmers Subsistence farmers Socio-political policy, law, employment, population, etc. Technological inputs, new technology, etc Infrastructural/Devel opmental roads, markets, ICTs, etc. Capacity development: in enabling environment, institutional strengthening, & human resource levels.
3 Extension as Agriculture Innovation Brokers Innovation Brokers are intermediary organizations that sit between and connect different agents involved in innovation trajectories in developing countries (Klerx, Hall, Leeuwis) Many actors can be IBs Traditional skills needed agronomy animal science natural resource management extension methods Plus facilitation skills organization skills market orientation and skills networking skills (value chain, research, agrometeorology, funding, training institutions) communication and ICT Plus, plus an organization willingness to risk, experiment ability to learn from experiences a learning organization

Small producers & professionals should work in a team for rural community goals There is a goal for the communities and the service providers to both live better. All should work peacefully and honestly for community well being The community wants and wishes the high quality support from PBA December 2012
