CONCLUSION We are serious about learning We want science improve our standards and underpin the value of sustainability certification We want to work with partners on examining the right research questions 41
Thank you! The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.
Biodiversity and Agriculture Commodities Program (BACP) Bruce Wise World Cocoa Foundation Partnership Meeting 5 th June 2013
IFC s interest in biodiversity Presentation Structure About BACP and the cocoa grant portfolio Phase 1 Key Messages Next Steps 44
IFC s Interest in Biodiversity TEEB for Business Coalition Environmental Impacts valuation at US$4.7 trillion per year IFC s Performance Standard Framework - PS 6 Biodiversity and Natural Resources requirements now include client s primary supply chains IFC s Agribusiness Strategy 3 strategic objectives, of which one is to make environmental and social sustainability a business driver 45
About BACP Protect biodiversity of global importance within the production landscapes of agricultural commodities Program component areas: 1) Removing policy barriers; 2) Supporting better production; 3) Increasing demand for biodiversity-friendly products; 4) Encouraging financial services Grant making facility Target commodities: Palm Oil Soy Cocoa 20 projects for a total $6.3M in Mid-term evaluation completed 10 year program with a first approved phase of 5 years (January 2008-December 2013) 46
BACP: Supporting & Enhancing Multi-stakeholder Initiatives 47
Cocoa Portfolio Sourcetrust Ghana and Bioversity International Conservation Alliance 48
Key Messages Certification can help conserve when it leads to a scaling up of on farm best practices and considers landscape-scale interactions. (i.e. planning for HCV) Credibility demands that eco-standards and certifications become more impact-oriented: A range of assessment methodologies should be employed including audit data, field-based assessments and spatial analysis to measure impact and to influence the eco-standard review process. Long-term public-private partnerships are essential: for building capacity to conserve and manage biodiversity within commodity landscapes. More work is needed on the enabling environment to engage government and the private sector to support and reward sustainable land-use planning. Active monitoring, not just initial assessments are essential for effective HCV preservation: BACP has developed cutting edge tools for protecting HCVAs, a critical criterion for compliance within both RTRS and RSPO certifications. 49
Next Steps Preparation for Phase 2 of BACP underway, taking into account mid-term review recommendations, key focus areas going forward: Supporting the adoption of credible standards within our clients supply chains Building of market-based financial instruments to support that change Continued research on biodiversity impacts linked to standards/certification adoption Thank You bwise@ifc.org 50
