WISHH began working in Burkina Faso in 2010 that resulted in the first exports of US value added soy proteins (VASPs) the same year. Initial exports consisted of defatted soy flour to a single milling company that used the product in its sixty bakeries. Realizing the competitive advantage of using soy flour, they were unwilling to distribute the product to other bakers, creating the need to identify an exclusive supply chain partner. This was accomplished in 2013, leading to current efforts to further develop the export market. Prior to WISHH interventions in the country, no U.S. origin VASPs were being imported into the market. The new supply chain partner will work to import and distribute DSF to interested bakers as well as TSP and ISP for the meat processing industry. Ongoing supply chain development will expand with the USDA Quality Samples Program, scheduled to begin in late WISHH has conducted a number of activities and provided a number of services to the poultry industry as Burkina Faso has a large and vibrant poultry industry. WISHH services in the food and feed industry include technical assistance, conferences, technical seminars and trade team mission trainings. Burkina Faso Ouagadougou Population 17,812,961 GDP per capita $1,400 French Exports of Value Added 74 MT Soy Proteins 2012 A country-wide conference was held in June of 2012 to communicate the benefits of incorporating soy to increase nutrition and efficiency. WISHH consultants specifically focused presentations on the processing and quality of soy ingredients in poultry feed. The value added services that WISHH provides through its activities have proven beneficial to food and feed processors and have commanded loyalty to U.S. VASPs over less expensive Chinese, Indian, European and South American soy product ingredients.
WISHH began working in Cameroon in 2009 and the first U.S. exports of value added soy proteins (VASPs) began in Prior to WISHH s entry into in Cameroon, there were no commercial VASP exports into the market. The addition of French speaking program management in 2011 has led to the advancement of project goals Cameroon Increasing the use of soy products and education about the benefits of soy in nutrition are among the primary goals of WISHH. WISHH offers technical assistance to local bakeries and soy processors in Cameroon, and in 2012 hosted a conference focusing on the impacts of soy. These efforts gave WISHH the unique opportunity to develop a partnership with Imperial Foods, a snack food and beverage producer based in Douala. This collaborative effort has led to the development of a soy fortified snack noodle that is currently being offered on the commercial market. Yaounde Population 20,549,221 GDP per capita $2,400 English and French Ongoing efforts include the identification of a supply chain partner that will help to capitalize on future opportunities for defatted soy flour sales to Cameroon s baking industry. WISHH began implementing the Supply Chain Partner Model in 2007 and has developed several supply chain partners in African countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
WISHH began to work in Kenya with support from USDA s Emerging Market Program in 2001, with the first commercial sales of value added soy proteins (VASPs) occurring in Prior to these initial WISHH interventions, no U.S. origin VASPs were being exported into the Kenyan market. In 2007, WISHH implemented and tested the supply chain partner model by working exclusively with one company, resulting in sustained market growth in the following years. Continuing efforts are being made to move commercial sales forward. WISHH provides technical assistance to food processors, hosting conferences and technical seminars, increasing consumer awareness of the nutritional benefits of soy and further building supply chain partner capacity. KENYA Nairobi Population 44,037,656 GDP per capita $1,800 Exports of Value Added Soy Proteins 2012 English and Kiswahili MT While WISHH continues to support and advance the use of information campaigns for highlighting the value of soy in nutrition, the livestock sector has provided an opportunity for WISHH to introduce new feeding technology and protein supplements. New and expanded product development efforts continue through technical assistance and trade team missions to define superior solutions for using VASPs in the food processing industry. The value added services that WISHH provides through its activities have proven beneficial to food processors and have commanded loyalty to U.S. origin VASPs over less expensive Chinese, Indian, European and South American soy product ingredients. WISHH has formed strong affiliations with its full value chain partners in Kenya and with funding from USDA s Global Based Initiative Program, it will continue supporting these partners by hosting a 2014 Spring conference in Kenya. The conference will continue helping these partners incorporate soy into their products as well as perpetuate the continuing education about soy.
As a partner in a multi-year assistance program (MYAP) funded by USAID and lead by Opportunities Industrialization Center, WISHH carries responsibilities for the development of three sustainable components of the program to improve nutrition in two of the most resource-limited counties in Liberia. These components include food processing and blending, aquaculture, and nutrition education. The WISHH nutrition education component includes building a team to support capacity-building in the growing and changing government policies to standardize the health and nutrition of Liberians. In the two targeted counties, Grand Gedeh and River Gee, WISHH has developed a team to align with government plans, support government Community Health Volunteers (gchvs), and build on existing nutrition messages, called Essential Nutrition Actions or ENAs. Working with the Ministry of Health and Social Work (MOHSW) and the County Health Teams (CHTs), WISHH has developed a system to recruit Community Health Promoters (CHPs) to disseminate messages on prevention of malaria, nutrition for pregnant and lactating women, breastfeeding, nutrition for small children, hygiene and sanitation, health care access, and dietary diversity (with an emphasis on dietary protein). LIBERIA Monrovia Population 3,989,703 GDP per capita $700 English As the program reaches the eligible participants (pregnant/lactating women, caregivers with children under two years of age, and community members), the maintenance of the program will be gradually turned over to the government CHTs and gchvs while the WISHH program CHPs and other personnel will be phased out. The nutrition education component complements the other two WISHH components of Super Gari and Aquaculture to improve nutritional status of vulnerable populations in the poorest counties in Liberia with an emphasis on dietary protein consumption.
The food processing component includes the use of locally-sourced cassava to produce the dried product called gari. This product, along with locallypurchased gari, is blended with soy flour and a premix of micronutrients to produce one kilogram packages of Super Gari for distribution as a part of the Health, Agriculture, Nutrition, Development and Sustainability (HANDS) program to support the various components of the program, including nutrition education beneficiaries, volunteers, school feeding, and others. The Super Gari program included the set-up, training, and management of processing facilities in the targeted counties of Grand Gedeh and River Gee, which LIBERIA Monrovia Population 3,989,703 GDP per capita $700 English had no previous capacity for medium-scale processing. Through this process, capacity in the areas of hygiene/sanitation, good manufacturing practices, quality control, marketing activities, and business operations were built for local personnel involved in the facilities. With this improved capacity, the facilities act as incubators for food processing business development to support sustainability of a nutritionally-dense product that can improve nutrition and health of the local population as well as support income generation for both farmers and processors to assist in alleviating poverty, one of the primary reasons for malnutrition.
WISHH partnered with Planet Aid/DAPP-Malawi to build a sustainable nutrition education program for both primary school teachers and health officers working in their HIV prevention program. The three year program spanned from and was funded through the USDA Food for Progress program. A train the trainer format was implemented with the Total Control of the Epidemic (TCE) program to assist these community health officers in adding nutrition to their community HIV awareness programs. This door-to-door campaign reached more than 420,000 people in the southern region of Malawi, concentrating on Blantyre and Zomba areas. Topics included basic nutrition using Malawi guidelines, food safety and sanitation, dental health, and nutrition in illness, among others. Training on balanced diet emphasized the importance of protein and aligned with Malawi government efforts to support soy agriculture and consumption. MALAWI Lilongwe Population 16,777,547 GDP per capita $900 Official Language Chichewa The nutrition education program equipped leadership and teacher trainers at the DAPP Teacher Training Colleges (TTC) with both nutrition education and facilitation skills-building training. This set of modules was integrated into the TTC curriculum throughout the DAPP system in Malawi so that student teachers are equipped to act as a resource in teaching primary school children and the surrounding communities about nutrition topics relevant to their everyday living. Planet Aid and Humana People to People programs across Africa have used this set of modules as a model to base nutrition education for teacher training Nutritional health is important to both prevent and treat disease.
Planet Aid and their local partner, ADPP- Mozambique, have partnered with WISHH to provide nutrition education to primary school teachers throughout the country as a part of their McGovern- Dole Food for Education program. Materials on nutrition topics are developed and implemented by WISHH to build capacity by training trainers for the program, who will act as resources and provide ongoing training throughout Mozambique. This program will transfer knowledge to more than a million teachers and pupils in the country. The threeyear program will continue through November of Included in the program are modules that directly target the school feeding portion of the program, which includes the use of corn soy blend (CSB). It is expected that both knowledge and dietary intake of MOZAMBIQUE Maputo Population 24,096,669 GDP per capita $1,200 Portuguese and Emakhuwa children will improve during the course of the school feeding program. Sustainability of improved knowledge is included in the three-year training cycle and a full set of modules, including monitoring and evaluation materials, will be available as a reproducible model for ongoing nutrition education for primary school teachers
WISHH began working in Nigeria in 2008 with support from USDA s Emerging Markets Program. Initial efforts focused on providing technical assistance to targeted food processors and hosting conferences to bring stakeholder s together. Through USDAs Global Based Initiative and Market Access Program, WISHH continues to support increased sales and services to the food processing industry through technical assistance, conferences, technical seminars, consumer awareness campaigns and trade team trainings. WISHH uses Soy Media Campaigns to raise community awareness about the nutritional benefits of soy. WISHH has been working with its supply chain partner to develop effective messaging through a variety of mediums such as print, radio, TV, consumer taste tests and school kitchens to reach its audiences. The messages used in the campaign focus on basic soy nutritional information with catchy tag lines and theme songs. 9 WISHH began working in Senegal in 2008 and the first USA exports of value added soy proteins (VASPs) began in Language barriers negatively impacted WISHH s ability to capitalize on the opportunities in Francophone west Africa until later in 2011 when French speaking program representatives were put in place on the ground. The subsequent identification of a supply chain partner in Senegal has aided WISHH s capability to capitalize on the opportunities to expand the utilization of VASPs in the baking, restaurant and hotel sectors. WISHH had facilitated activities and services to the food processing industry prior to the addition of the supply chain partner and is currently increasing efforts to expand technical assistance, technical seminars, trade team trainings and consumer awareness campaigns. WISHH s efforts in Senegal opened the country s export market for U.S. origin VASPs. Prior to WISHH interventions no U.S. produced VASPs were being imported into Senegal commercially. l a g e n Se Dakar Population 13,300,410 GDP per capita $2,100 French Exports of US value added soy proteins 32.5 MT
