Meeting for the Presentation of NIAES Research Topics Meeting for the presentation of NIAES research topics 008: Toward future safety management in agriculture and the environment Tokyo 8 Nov After the keynote speech, entitled ÒConservation of biodiversity and our futureó, by Prof. T. Yahara of Kyushu University, NIAES research topics, including prediction of rice yields under global warming and the NIAES Historical Agro-environment Browsing System, were presented. Seminar NIAES Open Seminar in Fukushima Fukushima 8 Sep Latest research topics were presented by the Fukushima Agricultural Technology Centre and NIAES to promote cooperation in future research. NIAES Open Seminar, ÒToward applying metagenome analysis Tsukuba 7 Dec 08 7 to agro-environmental researchó Leading research in metagenome analysis was presented and the possibility of applying this method to agro-environmental research was discussed. NIAES Open Seminar ÒSurvey of new allelochemicals in AsiaÓ Tsukuba 8 Jan 09 5 The recent status of allelopathy and allelochemicals in Asian countries was presented, and collaborative initiatives toward establishing an international network for this research in Monsoon Asia were discussed. 47

2 Research Meeting The Ecosystem Informatics Symposium: Spatial Information Technology for Understanding the Agro-Ecosystem Tsukuba 0 May 08 4 Practical applications of remote sensing and GIS technologies were discussed. Some new methods developed by NIAES were also presented. 8th Seminar on Organic Chemical Studies: Recent trends in remediation of soil contaminated by POPs derived from pesticides Tsukuba 7 Sep 08 8 Recent trends in POPs and approaches to the remediation of contaminated soils were introduced, and the direction of further studies of risk management was discussed. 5th Research Meeting on Pesticides: Problems with pesticide residues in rotational crops Tsukuba 8 Sep Recent topics on problems with pesticide residues in rotational crops, case studies of related crop cultivation in various prefectures, were presented and future issues were discussed. The 6th Seminar on Soil and Water: Efforts toward Reducing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Loads in the Environment Tsukuba 5 Feb shared information on the background of the European UnionÕs agro-environmental policy, featuring cross-compliance and environmental payments, and they discussed the problem of how to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loads in our country. The 5th Meteorology Workshop: Free Air CO Enrichment (FACE) Experiment: Past, Present and Future Tsukuba 7 Feb 09 5 Decadal studies in rice FACE at Shizukuishi, in Iwate Prefecture, were summarized, and further studies of next-generation crop FACE were discussed. 48
