19 RESEARCH PROJECTS Applied research goes hand in hand with innovation. Senova have a long standing engagement with oat breeding and the testing and marketing of other crops. We accompany this investment with focused applied research, with the aim of optimising performance and creating new market opportunities. Snapshots of current projects are shown below. OATS for health and nutrition (InnovOat) A five year project with close to 2 million of BBSRC finance, with significant funding by Senova and further support by the oat milling industry, aims to enhance the nutritional quality and value of oats in the human food sector. The IBERS oat programme and the innovation of UK oat millers is globally recognised. The increasing awareness of the benefits of oats in our diets will drive new product development and markets, creating competitive advantages for growers and processors while improving society s diet. Key within this project will be increasing the proven health components of oats such as beta glucan, and the unique antioxidants. Alongside this project is an agronomy programme considering the impacts of environment and management systems. ProtYield There is a direct link between protein content and yield in most crops. This Innovate UK and industry funded project investigated protein content in legumes and worked towards breaking that link in peas and beans. The lines developed from this project have the potential to improve the amino acid profile of proteins in animal feed to improve digestibility, and research continues. 19

20 T R I T I C A L E Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye. It is a crop whose potential has not yet been fully realised in the UK. Elsewhere, particularly Poland, Germany and Sweden, it finds its place on the farm and market. There is now an increasing interest in growing triticale for anaerobic digestion in the UK. Triticale delivers environmental and biodiversity benefits, reducing greenhouse gases and lowering production costs, both of which could be a significant impetus for this crop. The nitrogen use efficiency of triticale has been clearly demonstrated in the UK, where over five seasons in an Innovate funded project it outperformed wheat at a number of trial sites across a range of nitrogen rates. More details can be found in a publication Understanding Triticale. Visit Triticale produces grain with high lycine values and so is ideal for on-farm feeding. As a versatile lower input crop, other uses of triticale include whole crop production, organic grain production, game cover and thatching. The recent growth of anaerobic digestion in the UK provides a new and exciting end market for triticale as feedstock. With its early maturity, high biomass and low production costs it could prove to be an ideal crop choice and interest is growing. The combination of short straw, exceptional standing ability and early maturity makes Honey ideally suited to higher fertility and wetter areas and also the North and West of the UK. Honey produces large, attractive grain with relatively high protein content, suitable for the export market. Vespa has short, stiff straw and has improved standing ability and a larger seed size than the market leader. It is also early to ripen. Vespa has large grain and a pale hilum and is suitable for export, as well as the animal feed market. 29 S P R I N G O I L S E E D R A P E While often in the shadow of winter oilseed rape, spring oilseed rape does offer similar functional attributes but with reduced growing costs. The appeal of spring oilseed rape is: l Low growing costs l Flexible sowing window l Good disease resistance and spring vigour l 140 days from sowing to harvest l Less Light Leaf Spot and Phoma l Easy management l Ease of harvest l Low risk crop l Less pigeon damage. 30 L I N S E E D Senova has been engaged in linseed development and variety introduction since the early 1980s, and while the market price is volatile the crop can offer growers viable options. Linseed is a flexible crop with a wide sowing window. Early maturing varieties give an agronomic advantage as they allow growers to sow their preferred autumn crop when conditions are ideal. Abacus spring linseed combines early maturity with good on farm seed yields and remains a popular variety. It is a medium height, white flowered variety, which produces medium-small brown seeds. Abacus has good standing power and importantly matures early and evenly to facilitate easy combining. It shows excellent resistance to powdery mildew and is suitable for all areas and conditions. 31 C O V E R C R O P S Bento OIL RADISH A huge increase in free living nematode (FLN) populations over recent years is having a large impact on potato crop productivity. Even relatively low populations of some FLN species can lead to spraing symptoms. Attacks on roots also make plants more susceptible to drought and create wounds which allow other bacteria and fungi to enter into the plant. Biofumigation is a natural approach using plants containing specific biological active compounds to suppress soil borne pests such as FLN and PCN. The use of biofumigation for nematode control in the UK is still in its infancy but there is a need to develop and extend methods of control. Bento oil radish could potentially have an effective role as a biofumigant, but more work is needed to fully determine the benefits. Bento, as a cover crop, does however offer other benefits in addition to biofumigation. Leafy and fast initial development Good weed suppression Delivers valuable humus for a biological activation of the soil High dry matter yield Improves air and water content of the soil Protects nutrients from eluviation Vitalises soil activity by the supply of easily decomposable organic substance(s) Enriches valuable humus. Other cover crops are available. For more information contact us on A natural solution to an age-old problem. 31

32 Number 1 for grain quality Chosen for its outstanding grain quality, Group 4 variety Costello also brings excellent yields, the highest specific weight on the RL, superb disease resistance and stiff straw. It will reduce your risk and enhance your profit.
