Global Dairy Agenda for Action Climate Change Launched in Berlin, September 24, 2009 By Richard Doyle President, IDF
Our shared agenda The global dairy industry has a shared interest with governments and the global community to produce nutritious food for today and for future generations in a sustainable way. For the dairy industry this means providing consumers with the nutritious products they want, in a way which is environmentally sound, socially responsible, economically viable
The global issue The global issue is that producing nutritious dairy foods requires energy and the use of such energy needs to be as efficient as possible to reduce the impact on climate change
Requires a global response Industry Stakeholders: Producer/organizations, processors/associations, transporters, suppliers, retailers Along the global dairy supply chain
Truly a global dairy industry approach.. Signatories of the Agenda for Action: International Dairy Federation (IDF) Sustainability Agricultural Initiative (SAI) Platform Global Dairy Platform (GDP) International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) European Dairy Association (EDA) Pan American Dairy Federation (FEPALE) Eastern and Southern African Dairy Association (ESADA)
The seven signatories represent 1,500,000 million dairy farmers 590 billion litres of milk (85 % of total production) Dairy food sales estimated at $500 Billion
Our Objective In launching this Global Agenda for Action, our objective is: To demonstrate the positive activities that the dairy sector is undertaking to support its commitment to sustainability: environmentally, socially and economically. To catalogue the continuous improvements already made and in progress as evidence of the industry s commitment. To make a call for action from policy makers to provide a supportive regulatory policy environment in which the sector can deliver on its commitments, without compromise to the dairy industry s contribution to global nutritional and social wellbeing.
Our commitment 1. Promotion of a standard method for measurement of greenhouse gas production 2. Promote and share best practice to minimise the production of greenhouse gases 3. Advance the establishment of systems and protocols for measurement of emissions 4. Promote opportunities for emissions reduction on the farm 5. Share research and information to maximise progress in developing mitigation technologies
Transparent reporting The Global Dairy Agenda for Action climate change is intended as a living document and process. Today we are committing to: 1. Ongoing reporting through the website Green paper 2. Periodic reporting website, world dairy summit
The Green Paper To achieve our objective we recognise the need to provide evidence: Evidence has been collected on past, current and planned work in 6 key areas: 1. Emissions Reduction 2. Energy Efficiency 3. Transport Efficiency 4. Reduction in loss of milk and milk products 5. Resource Efficiency 6. Life Cycle Analysis and Management We will continue to provide evidence of the growing volume of work in these areas. The Green paper 260 projects in 6 key areas across 40 countries
What is the purpose of the GREEN paper To catalogue the continuous improvements already made and in progress as evidence of the industry s commitment. To include the programs, trends and major achievements implemented to address the environmental impact of climate change by in all sectors of the dairy industry To be a living document, be updated over the years to reflect additional efforts To be available to the general public through an internet site
The Green Paper 6 Key Areas 1. Emissions Reduction Agricultural Emissions Research Optimising animal feeding Optimising use of fertilisers Optimising manure management 2. Energy Efficiency On-farm energy use in milking and refrigeration Optimised processing Investing in renewable energy 3. Transport Efficiency Optimised milk collections Optimised product distribution Optimised engine performance and driver training 4. Reduction in loss of milk and milk products Shelf life improvements for fresh products Working with retailers and consumers to reduce household waste Energy capture from waste product 5. Resource Efficiency Increase recycling of packaging Use of packaging with the lowest environmental impact Increase recovery of waste 6. Life Cycle Analysis and Management Development of a global standard for measuring monitoring and reducing GHG emissions Working with FAO and ISO
Examples 1. Emissions Reduction 2. Energy Efficiency 3. Transport Efficiency 4. Reduction in loss of milk and milk products 5. Resource Efficiency 6. Life Cycle Analysis and Management
1. Emissions reductions United States The Cow of the Future project has a goal to reduce emissions from enteric methane by 25 percent by the year With a 50 percent adoption rate, the potential result from these solutions would be a 30 percent increase in feed efficiency: Reducing the carbon footprint of fluid milk by 0.6 million tonnes of CO 2 e and Generate up to $240 million in business value
1. Emissions reductions Optimising nutrient management Rod and Libby Swan Western Victoria Australia Australia The paddock is now productive and we re conserving resources by recycling much of our water, - Libby Swan Achieving better manure management and water savings through: Installation of new effluent ponds Processing and filtering water to be used for irrigation
2. Energy Efficiency GJ/tonne (Themal, Elect, & Diesel) Specific Energy Consumption F04 F05 F06 F07 F08 F09 Prov YEAR New Zealand 34 per cent reduction (2009) in energy use per tonne of product since 1990 New Zealand processing inter-site Emissions Account a virtual carbon trading system, to raise employee awareness and track progress of emission reductions Energy savings achieved through: monitoring and targeting heat recovery projects changed operating conditions new technology co-generation facilities
2. Energy Efficiency United States We saw this as an economic and environmental management tool. It's helped to diversify our farm. - Bill Rowell, Green Mountain Dairy, Vermont Converting manure into: Bio energy Creating electricity to power area homes Bedding Fertilizer
3. Transport Efficiencies France The rationalization of the delivery of end products from production sites is a source of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Filling of pallets up to 100%, reduction of pallet weight, reduction of the frequency of deliveries, mutualised deliveries, reduction of empty weight, environment friendly driving
4. Reduction in loss of milk and milk products France Shelf life improvements for fresh products Working with retailers and consumers to reduce household waste Energy capture from waste product
5. Resource efficiency United Kingdom Milk Link is now using 23% less primary packaging material on its products, sourcing 25% of packaging from recycled raw material and ensuring that 39% of packaging can itself be recycled. All this is being achieved without compromising pack quality.
5. Resource efficiency United States New technologies including: Plastic covers to limit silage emissions Vacuuming and recycling manure from barns to fertilize crops Water re-use for crop irrigation
6. Life Cycle Analysis and Management Development of a national or international standard for measuring monitoring and reducing GHG emissions working with FAO and ISO
6. Life Cycle Analysis and Management United Kingdom UK Roadmap - With the data collected from the benchmarking tool Dairy UK will publish an annual sustainability report England data has revealed that almost 4,500 dairy farmers are currently part of an Environmental Stewardship Scheme.
