5 Gerald GABERSCIK Edith SCHREINER SESSION 2 SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY Tuesday September 25 Morning Session: Seminars SCIENTIFIC QUALITY AND INTEGRITY Dr. techn. DI Gerald GABERSCIK This contribution broaches two important themes in international research standards. Part 1 analyzes the issue of scientific quality in terms of designing and performing experiments well. Part 2 addresses the complex issue of authorship while providing guidelines to handle co-authorship decisions properly, as well as appropriate citation practice for scientific publications. Lastly this seminar aims to raise students awareness of the problem of plagiarism. Different types of plagiarism are defined and possible consequences for the individuals involved as well as the scientific community at large will be discussed. Gerald GABERSCIK s training is in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering. In 2006 he assumed responsibility for the office of Quality Management in Research at the Graz University of Technology. QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION Dr. Edith SCHREINER Public safety demands that quality monitoring and international standards for laboratory practices are integral components of industrial production for a huge spectrum of products from pharmaceuticals to food chemistry. This module deals with different quality management systems, which are of particular relevance in drug development. Correct application of these systems in succession ensures the quality of non-clinical studies, clinical trials and ultimately the production of pharmaceuticals. Perspectives and practice from the individual researcher to the European level are discussed. Edith SCHREINER is an experienced researcher as well as a planner, practitioner and supervisor of industrial quality management systems. She acts as a consultant in the development of quality assurance systems and as an internal and external auditor of quality control in operation. 5
6 Ulrike FELT SESSION 2 SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY Wednesday September 26 Afternoon Session: Workshop RESEARCH ETHICS Univ. Prof. Dr. Ulrike FELT Facilitators for the group discussion: Maximilian FOCHLER, Michael STRASSNIG, Lisa SIGL In recent years the discussions around research ethics have intensified. Data manipulation, plagiarism, issues of data ownership or doubtful co-authorship practices have moved into the limelight of science policy debate and are discussed within academic institutions. The aim of this workshop is to develop skills in recognizing, articulating and acting upon ethical issues that arise through research activities. A vital first step is to raise awareness about changes in the research environment, which have made it necessary to explicitly address these problems. The broad range of issues will be mapped out and a selection will be dealt with in some detail throughout the afternoon. For step two we address one concrete fraud case and follow it through in some detail in order to see the different individually small steps, which led to a major problem. In a third step two cases will be presented and investigated in smaller working groups. Finally, these experiences will be fed into a closing discussion. Ulrike FELT holds a PhD in physics as well as a habilitation in the social sciences (science and technology studies). Since 1999 she is professor for Social Studies of Science and head of the department at the University of Vienna. Throughout her career she has held numerous visiting professorships/research positions at CERN (Geneva, CH), the Université du Québec à Montréal, Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg, Maison des Sciences de l Homme in Paris and the ETH Zurich. She is widely experienced in running nationally- and internationally-funded big research projects and has published extensively on science, technology and society relations. As science policy expert she has worked for the European Commission and was chief editor of a major international social science journal over the past five years. Her own research areas include: 1) science communication, public engagement with technoscience, governance and public participation; and ELSA issues; 2) knowledge politics, embracing both the changing cultures of knowledge production but also how this gets translated into institutional policy. 6
7 Michael BREUER Julia K. SCHMIDT SESSION 3 INTERFACING SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY Tuesday September 25 Afternoon Session: Plenary INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY FROM SCIENCE TO MARKET Dr. Michael BREUER, Mag. Julia K. SCHMIDT (BASF AG, Ludwigshafen, DE) Industrial biotechnology has become a highly active field of research in recent years. The advantages of biocatalysis are exploited for the synthesis of chemical products. These range from optically active intermediates for pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications to bulk chemicals. A very characteristic aspect of industrial biotechnology is its high dependency on multidisciplinarity. Scientists and engineers with diverse academic backgrounds team up for the development of novel catalysts and processes. Next to excellence in science and technology, personal skills are key factors in this interdisciplinary and international environment. The tasks and challenges to industrialize biotechnological processes from research to production will be illustrated by some examples of BASF a major player in this arena. Michael BREUER, born in 1965, studied Biology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University, Bonn. From 1992 to 1993 he held a scholarship of the Boehringer-Ingelheim-Fonds to carry out research in the group of H. G. Floss at the University of Washington. He completed his PhD at the University Bonn in the group of E. Leistner on ansamacrolide biosynthesis in Actinomycetes (1995) and has been working as a research scientist in the Specialty Chemicals division at BASF AG since Julia K.
