Three pillars 1:1 Mentoring Networking Training
1:1 Mentoring Mentors are usually at least one, but not more than two steps ahead of her mentees with regard to their careers Members can be both mentee and mentor at the same time The coordination office matches mentees and mentors and initiates contact Mentor and mentee do NOT work at the same institute at the same time Mentor and mentee can set up their mentoring relationship according to their individual needs
Group and peer mentoring The coordination office also initiates contact for group or peer mentoring on request Group mentoring: Several mentees form a group to share their respective experiences with each other and to prepare group meetings with a single mentor Peer mentoring: Two scientific researchers at similar points of their respective careers are sharing their respective experiences with each other
Guidelines Check if you get along well with each other Clarify mutual expectations Define objectives and contents of the mentoring cooperation Agree on meeting times and overall duration of the mentoring process Discuss procedures and methods to be used If required, fix locations of meetings Offical de-registration at the coordination office (~ after one year)
Training Workshops and seminars, organised either by the coordination office or by one of Minerva-FemmeNet s cooperation partners Topics are e.g. Profession and professorship Research abroad Individual career development Communication / negotiation skills

Benefits for mentors You are part of a career-relevant network You enhance and train your social competence You assess your own career path and the experience you have gained You gain feedback to facilitate self-assessment, ensuring realistic self-perception You build up leadership skills
Statistics Members: >400 (MPS female scientists and alumnae) Mentors: 245 Mentees: 270 } 114 mentee and mentor at same time More than 40 former mentees have become mentors themselves because they want to give something back
Reports from former mentors and mentees My mentor gave me just the right advice in a difficult situation and it was particularly important that such advice came from a neutral party. We both had a successful and rewarding cooperation. Being a mentor gave me the opportunity to reflect on my own behavioural patterns, and I was able to help my mentee, who is a very independent and active young woman, in several ways. Being a mentor encouraged me to look for a mentor myself, and I asked a senior colleague in the professional area I wanted to work in to act as my mentor.
Reports from former mentors and mentees When I started working as a group leader, my mentor gave me great advice on how to recruit people and how to set up a working team. We have planned further conversations, and my mentor will have a look at my CV and hopefully give me some advice on planning further steps in my scientific career. All in all, I am very happy with this mentoring cooperation. I got to know a very different point of view on how to plan a career. Some of her [i.e. the mentor s] advice was not applicable to my situation but on the whole I benefitted from our talk and began actively taking steps towards my professional goals which I wouldn t have done otherwise.
