Since there is a trend towards achieving more and more high content information out of individual samples, the number of data points per compound is increasing (multiple dose responses, testing of enzyme panels etc.). This causes a growing amount of sample transfers, which can be handled very efficiently if parallel pipetting systems are involved. Why nl-volumes apart from saving costs? Very often DMSO is a limiting factor for compound handling. Most compounds (e.g. for high throughput screening) are stored in this organic solvent. But many biological assays, especially most of the cell based systems, are sensitive to this organic solvent. Therefore, intermediate concentrations of compounds in water based solvents are involved. This is an expensive step and often leads to compound precipitation effects. A way out of this drawback could be a compound transfer of very small volumes which, for example, allows for a 1:100 dilution directly from a DMSO based stock. An instrument capable of transferring nl volumes can easily perform such tasks. Why capillary based apart from saving disposables? There are several technologies which allow the transfer of compounds. Some are more robust - others less so. Capillary-based systems can provide more robustness, since during operation a relatively strong pressure pulse is applied, which can blow out the capillaries, thus creating an on-line cleaning effect. Capillary-based systems are very simple. They do not need any pistons and only need a short air pulse for working. This enhances the stability and robustness in comparison to more complicated technologies. Why dry apart from non- contact? Often it is necessary to separate the steps which prepare compounds and the investigation of these compounds (e.g. a screen). It is advantageous to prepare the compounds in a microplate, which is stored and then can be used directly in an assay without the need of any further reformatting. Adding compounds firstly implies a dry pipetting, which easily can be performed by applying a capillary based system. Why CyBi -HummingWell? The Powerful Compound Transfer The CyBi -HummingWell is a pipetting system based upon capillary action. 96 or 384 capillaries are filled simultaneously by capillary forces, whereas the dispensing is done by applying a pressure pulse on all capillaries at the same time. The aspiration is simply done by dipping the capillary array into the source plate, where capillary forces aspirate the liquid into the capillaries as it were they simultaneously fill themselves. The dispensing is undertaken by a very short pressure pulse, which blows out the contents of all capillaries simultaneously into the target plate. Whether it is a stand alone system or expanded to a compact assay workstation, due to CyBio s unique plate handling system the CyBi -HummingWell is one of the most reliable and fastest systems on the market.

It provides fast, exact and secure movement of microplates via a linear plate moving assembly. The base unit of the CyBi -HummingWell is plug and play compatible with a large number of ancillaray devices for increased capacity such as stackers. Stackers Efficient microplate storage with stackers enables unattended pro- of large batches of plates and consequently increases your cessing walk-away time. In a very space-saving way, CyBio s stackers fit to the linear carriages of the CyBi -HummingWell. Barcode reader The CyBi -HummingWell provides a compact and high-resolution barcode reader for tracking microplates. With up to 1000 scans per second, the barcode reader will be controlled with the instrument software CyBio Composer and is designed even for high throughput applications. It scans barcodes on the long or short side of the plate.
