APRIL 2015 Soryong (Ryan) Chae Department of Biomedical, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering Soryong (Ryan) Chae, PhD, is a global engineer and a new faculty member in the Department of Biomedical, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering. He completed his doctorate at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea in Following his PhD, Chae was employed as a post-doctoral fellow at Hokkaido University, Japan until From , he worked as a research associate at the Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology (CEINT), Duke University. He then took a full-time faculty position at the University of Sydney, Australia where he remained until Over the last ten years, Chae has authored four book chapters and 50 journal articles in water treatment using membrane science and environmental nanotechnology. He wants to make waves on water treatment around the world at UC. He has particular interests in environmental nanotechnology for the Smart Water System, which is a multi-disciplinary and integrated technology pursuing zero carbon footprint with energy harvesting and resource recovery from water and wastewater.
Chia-Ying (James) Lin Dane A. and Mary Louise Miller Endowed Chair in Biomedical Engineering Dr. Lin recently joined the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati with a unique experiential background. He will be leading the new Skeletal Tissue Evaluation and Engineering Laboratory (STEEL) in the UC Biomedical Engineering Program. Prior to joining UC CEAS, Dr. Lin concurrently held four faculty/administrative positions at the University of Michigan Medical School and College of Engineering. With his training in biomedical engineering and early career at a clinical department, he has developed his particular interest in translational research and become an engineerscientist bridging two research realms at both the colleges of Medicine and Engineering. His major research work in regenerative medicine utilizes image-aided design algorithms and computational biomechanics to create a three-dimensional structure for scaffolds that can retain native tissue properties even when they are made with compliant plastics. Moreover, the designed scaffolds can also serve as delivering vehicles for cells, proteins and other therapeutics. Such developed strategy has been applied pre-clinically in many types of tissue/organ repair/regeneration, including reconstruction in spine and jaw joints. Skeletal Tissue Evaluation and Engineering Laboratory (STEEL) A technology has been developed to computationally generate architectures created by designed microstructures that are arranged periodically. The final architectures can perform equivalent physical properties to native tissues, and be 3-D fabricated as a transplant to replace a damaged or defected organ, such as a jaw joint.
Yoonjee Park Department of Biomedical, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering Developing theranostic (therapeutic + diagnostic) colloidal delivery systems. Dr. Park has studied colloidal contrast agents for medical imaging, and drug delivery systems, or a combination of the two to enhance delivery efficiency and to image while treating a target of interest. She used a micro blood vessel model on-a-chip to examine anti-angiogenic effect of my biomedical colloid systems. Since ultrasound contrast agents, microbubbles, respond to ultrasound waves, Dr. Park found that drug delivery was facilitated by ultrasound in the presence of microbubbles, by direct observation of blood vessel cells. Park would like to continue her research area by developing novel and effective drug/gene delivery systems, assisted with medical devices, such as ultrasound, MRI, or laser. Figure 1. (A) Schematic figure of doxorubicin liposome-conjugated targeted microbubbles; (B) photograph and schematic figure of microvessel-on-a-chip.
Park, Y. (cont d). Figure 2. Images of doxorubicin liposome-conjugated microbubbles (a) under Bright field and (b) under TRITC filter. The images show that doxorubicin is conjugated on the surface of microbubbles. Figure 3. Microbubble destruction on the chip under ultrasound over time.
Park, Y. (cont d) Figure 4. Blood vessels treated with live/dead assay after injecting doxorubicin liposome-conjugated microbubbles (a) without ultrasound and (b) with ultrasound. Green cells and red cells represent live cells and dead cells, respectively. More dead cells were observed with ultrasound than without, suggesting drug delivery was promoted by ultrasound.
