A Europe-wide network of existing open access pilot and multipurpose demo-infrastructures for the bioeconomy European Bioeconomy congress Lodz 21/11/2017

Agenda What is this network about? How can I cooperate with the Pilots4U network Q&A

Pilots4U network Aim of this session: To invite relevant infrastructures to join To let bio-economy entrepreneurs with scale-up plans know that the network exists

Pilots4U project aim Project aim: Setup of one very visible, Europe-wide network of existing open access pilot and multipurpose demoinfrastructures for the bio-economy

Pilots4U network: what is open access In the context of infrastructure, open access involves physical infrastructure (in this case pilot equipment) being made available to clients other than the owners, for a fee (Source: Wikpedia) Joint investment in pilot infrastructure that can be used, for a fee, by any entrepreneur in need of scale-up

Why outsource your development and scale-up? Survey results 1. Faster: Accelerated development: faster time to markt 2. Cheaper: Saved development costs 3. Better: Improved characteristics of the process or final product 4. Stronger: Improved network

What bioeconomy pilot equipment?

What bioeconomy pilot equipment? Industrial Biotechnology Thermal conversion Algal cultivation Chemical Conversion Pulping Anaerobic digestion Fractionation Purification Material technologies Nutrient recovery

Scope of the project: Scale of equipment & facilities targeted Pilot scale: TRL4 - TRL6 Demonstration scale: TRL7 - TRL8 Public and private Open access In EU28

I have open access pilot or demo infrastructure and want to join the network I want to use the open access facilities from the network Find I want to share my opinion regarding what equipment, services and scale-up centers are needed

Project activities WP1: Mapping of existing infractructure in Europe WP2: Improving access to pilot infrastructures and interconnection WP3: Assessment of industry demand and future needs of open access centers WP4: Gap analysis and financing strategies to catalyze the expansion of capabilities WP5: Communication, dissemination and exploitation WP6: Project management

What? EnAlgae EnAlgae was a 4 year, 14.6M Strategic Initiative of the INTERREG IVB North West Europe (NWE) Programme, combining the expertise and resources of 19 Partners plus Observers encompassing 7 EU Member States. Overall aim: To develop sustainable pathways for algal bioenergy (microalgae and microalgae) in NW Europe Address the current lack of verifiable information on algal productivity via a new network of 9 algal pilots (microalgae and macroalgae). Integrate with existing industrial, agricultural and municipal processes to capture and remediate flue gas CO 2 and soluble aqueous wastes. Engage with diverse stakeholders across NWE to resolve technological and legislative bottlenecks for the sustainable deployment of algae-based bioenergy production, GHG mitigation and bioremediation

What? EnAlgae Objectives To maximise the transnational value of algal pilots across NWE, by creating an integrated Network that incorporates an up to date inventory and in which pilots collect and share data in a standardised manner and provide demonstrations to diverse project partners, observers and stakeholders (WP1). To identify the political, economic, social and technological opportunities for sustainable exploitation of algae within NWE, delivering information for policy makers, industry and investors on what algae production systems and end use markets are viable in the region (WP2). To combine information across the algal biotechnology delivery chain into an ICT-based tool which can guide decisions, identify gaps in knowledge and capability and provide a roadmap for stakeholders to focus future actions for algal biomass, bioenergy, GHG mitigation and bioremediation (WP3).

One example Swansea University Algal Pilot facility CSAR now has the largest research PBR capacity in the UK.. supported by analytical methods for bulk determinants. research for harvesting and processing and supplying data for modelling
