32 Better track performance and monitor growth trends using MRR In a typical subscription-run business growth is achieved by acquiring new customers, upgrading existing customers, and preventing customers from cancelling ( churning ) or downgrading their subscriptions. Measuring growth can be hard. Especially when you are offering multiple subscription plans with dissimilar terms and conditions. No matter whether you are a start-up or a public company, one of the key metrics used to monitor growth in a subscription run business is Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR). The MRR metric helps you to average your various pricing plans and billing periods in to a single and consistent number that you can use to determine whether or not you are on track in realizing your growth objective.

According to the revenue recognition principle, it is recorded as a liability until delivery is made, at which time it is converted into revenue. This is an annual subscription, so the base is the number of days in a year. Given that 2016 has 366 days and the subscription period for the add-on is 214 days (1 st of June until 31 st of December 2016) the customer will receive an invoice with the prorated amount (214 days divided by 366 days = 0,58). The quantity is set to 0,58 (of a year). The customer needs to pay 69,60 eur (ex vat) for the extra services subscribed to in 2016

This is an annual subscription, so the base is the number of days in a year. The add-on is prorated for this period. Given that 2016 has 366 days and the subscription period for the add-on is 89 days (4th of October 2016 to 31st of December 2016) The quantity is set to 0,243 (part of a year) * the number users. The invoice will show 2 lines: a credit is issued for 10 users (-291, 60 eur) and an additional invoice line for 8 users (234 eur). The customer will receive a credit invoice for -57,60 (ex vat) Tip: The field item quantity shows the quantity in the subscription, so in this example 10 and 8 users. These can be printed on the invoice.
