SGIP - Conceptual Architecture Project #ConnWeek
Goals Create a tool set to: Help understand and characterize where the SDO s are working Determine areas where PAP might be needed Determine where existing requirement sets and use cases are incomplete Covers all 7 domains and cross cutting issues Technology, market and process agnostic A Traceable link between national goals, use cases, requirements, and implementations Use cases linked to national goals Requirements mapped to services (services traceable to requirements) Conformance testing linked through requirements and use cases to goals
Process Collect all known use cases (complete) Sort use cases by NIST domain (50%) Run workshops to collect requirements Get feedback from attendees on final list Use requirements to build a set of services across smart grid Include call out for unregulated markets, building systems, etc as needed Create traceability matrix between requirements and services Publish result Run a set of meetings with people who have architecture models to align with the requirements from this process and the services here Most are at the logical/physical level and should map with little or no problem Create a set of information services that run between the domains and the business services in the conceptual framework to show the requirements for interoperability
Assumptions NIST Conceptual Model is the framework All Use cases are accepted as valid Intelligrid, SCE, NIST updates, CSWG New use cases accepted from any source ToGAF is the underlying method Outputs will be publically available Small team will do the actual heavy lifting of defining services All the CSWG materials on requirements will be accepted as the security requirements If the services definitions are complete, they will be accepted as the required security services DEWG will be polled for requirement documents NIST Phase I Workshop II materials will be reviewed for requirements and updated use cases
Conceptual Architecture Process Goals Workshop Aug Requirements Workshop Sept Services Workshops Business Oct IT Interaction Workshop Jan Feb Harmonization Meetings Q2/ Nov Goals Whitepaper Process Presentation Requirements Whitepaper Traceability Matrix Conceptual Services Traceability Matrix Interactions Traceability Matrix Whitepaper on each architecture reviewed
SG Systems Use Case Methodology Functional Requirements Detailed System Definition Use Case Development Functional Decomposition SRS Service Definitions Use Cases: Best Practice for Requirements Development
Statistics 9500 pages of national laws 400 National Goals 20 high level families 655 Use Cases, 20 System Requirement Documents, 33 originators Requirements 400 high level families of requirements 400 business requirements 450 technical requirements (4 domains complete, 3 to go)
Changes by NIST Domain XX Number of new business requirements (based on NIST Conceptual Architecture Project Analysis) #ConnWeek Santa Clara, CA May 23-26, 2011
Does What It: Characterize new requirements at the business level Provides a common vocabulary for discussion A basis for discussion for where standards might fit Does Not: Require a specific technology or process Specific services to be delivered Dictate any organization or services split Cover existing business services
SGIP Uses To map SDO s standards efforts into the overall smart grid ecosystem To allow comparison with various smart grid architectures To create discussions in the DEWG To quickly start end to end test cases To determine gaps in the national standards efforts Others Develop their own architectures Map new services into their organization Develop new product ideas Develop new business ideas To determine what the detailed requirements are embedded in a business function
What is a Conceptual Architecture? Three Business Services: Order Eat Pay How many different businesses can you make? Answer Thousands Conceptual Architecture is about understanding the What
Process (To Date) Collect all known use cases (complete) Sort use cases by NIST domain, functionality, and Duplication (Complete) Collect National Goal Documents and Pull Goals (Complete) Goal Decomposition (Complete) Draft a goal white paper (Draft) Get expert group together to do national goal decomposition (Complete) Gather Requirements from various bottom up documents (Complete) More than 600 use cases reviewed 20+ other source documents (e.g. OpenHAN, OpenADR) detailed requirements gathered Requirements mapped into families (complete) Families tied to national goals (in process)
Process (To Date II) Use requirements to build a set of business services across smart grid Include unregulated markets, building systems, etc as needed Create traceability matrix between requirements and services and combine with goal decomposition Create IS services from Business Services Workshop Complete Matrix being finished and reviewed To be posted next week Run a set of meetings with organizations developing architecture models to align with the goal decomposition/requirements and the conceptual services Initial P2030 meeting occurred
Process (Future) Provide an overview document to assist reviewers Publish a strawman for wider inputs Run a set of meetings with organizations developing architecture models to align with the goal decomposition/requirements and the conceptual services ITU has asked IETF has asked Zigbee has asked Create a set of information services that run between the domains and the business services in the conceptual framework to show the requirements for interoperability Create a set of architecture templates for publication
Gaps to Date 9 new use cases to cover the Market Domain Customer Domain (Customer centric) Service Provider Domain (all areas) Overall business management Many use cases that exist are highly incomplete (e.g. you can create a user, but not delete or modify a user)

Business Views Business Strategy Workbook Business Capabilities Workbook Business Knowledge Repository Leveraging The S-CAP Workbooks Creating A To-Be State Business Architecture Description Describes the strategic goals and tactical approach that drive an organization forward to the 2B state. The strategic goals are mapped to metrics that provide ongoing evaluation of how successfully the organization is achieving its goals. Describes the primary business functionality or business services of an enterprise and the sections of the organization that perform those functions. This view categorizes and details customer-facing functions, supplier-related functions, core business execution functions, and business management functions. Establishes common semantics within an organization. Provides a vocabulary that the organization relies upon to communicate and to conceptualize an understanding of its business areas.
