Metering and AMI Interest Group Brian K. Seal Webcast Meeting August 25th, 2014
The Metering and AMI Interest Group is a sponsored activity of EPRI Research Program 161F - Advanced Metering Systems (this project set is new in 2015) 2
Agenda for Today s Call Introductions Recap of meter hot-socket topic from prior meetings AMI System Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) Ongoing 2014 assessment: 2 to150khz impact on ANSI meters Presentation of new EPRI research organization for Metering & AMI Identification of needs/interests for
Recap of Hot Socket Presentations February 4 th Presentation by Scott Weikel, ANSI C12 ANSI C12 is developing extensions to the metering standards to cover general safety, including thermal aspects April 2 nd Presentation by Underwriters Laboratories UL has developed a safety test procedure for solid state electricity meters: UL Electric Utility Meter Safety Standard and Conformity Assessment Both presentations and webcast recordings are available at: 4
AMI Prognostics and Heath Management Guide Common Process Development Initiative Started in 2013, with participation of utilities and AMI vendors Continued emphasis as a highvalue activity in EPRI program Contributions from key component manufacturers Engagement with other industries through IEEE P Outline Report 5
What is Prognostics? Early Failures Normal Mid- Life Failures Wear Out Failures Based on What I can Observe Now How Much Time Do I Have Left? Failure Rate Tolerance End of Life 6
AMI Prognostics and Heath Management Guide Working group meeting weekly throughout 2014 you are welcome to participate Engagement of Arend Koert (Kinectrics) expert in metering accelerated life testing Recent focus has been the sampling processes that are used for each PHM process Continued EPRI interest in conducting a PHM Business Case workshop with CALCE in Would you attend? 7
2 to 150 KHz Impact on Meters Previously reported-on in this forum Issues noted with certain IEC meter types. Ongoing action in IEC: EMC testing for meters test for immunity to conducted, differential mode disturbances in the 2 to 150KHz range 2014 EPRI project working with Hydro Quebec to test ANSI meters in the same way. Test design and setup in process, will report back findings 8
2015 Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Program ICT Emerging Technologies & Tech Transfer (161A) Enterprise Architecture & Integration (161E) 6 Scenarios Evaluated with: IntelliGrid Advisors ICT Council EPRI Directors & Managers Splitting-out Two New Project Sets Enterprise Architecture ICT for Transmission (161B) ICT for Distribution (161C) ICT for DER (161D) Advanced Metering Systems (161F) Advanced Metering Drivers Enable Domain Focused Research Foster Coordination Align w/stakeholders P180 Meters 9
IntelliGrid Project Set F Advanced Metering Systems Four Parts: 1. Open standards and interoperability 2. Optimizing the value of AMI systems through new uses and value streams 3. Meter/AMI O&M: identifying best practices for selection, deployment, operation, maintenance, management, lifecycle planning 4. The meter: investigating solid state meter performance, accuracy, and reliability Project Set Lead: Brian Seal bseal@epri.com, (865)
161F Sub-Project: 1. Open standards and interoperability Issue AMI systems are proprietary and utilities are locked-in to single sources of supply Lack of competition results in higher prices and lack of innovation Vendors are not inclined to change Approach Developing an open reference architecture and components Direct contribution to standards organizations guide the direction of industry Vendor engagement, interoperability workshops 11
Transforming Smart Grid Devices from Products to Platforms Enabling consistent behavior across diverse meter brands and communication networks AMI systems becoming more flexible and available to the utility to manage and evolve Pre-Pay Hot Socket Detection Demand Limiting AMI Headend Theft Detection Tamper Detection PQ Monitoring 12
161F Sub-Project: 2. Optimizing Advanced Metering System Value and Utilization Issue AMI systems have the potential to be utilized in many ways and their data to be processed for many purposes. Need to identify and prove-out potential additional uses of AMI systems and data. System impacts and benefits need to be quantified in order to aid utilities in business case development and in optimizing the value of AMI assets. Approach Work collaboratively, sharing experiences and learnings Perform data analytics and laboratory evaluations Work with meter manufacturers directly 13
161F Sub-Project: 3. Advanced Metering Systems Operations and Management Issue Management and operation of AMI fixed networks is a new endeavor for many utilities. The systems are recent inventions, and best practices re just being discovered for their deployment, operation, health monitoring, management, and replacement. Approach Track industry experiences. Utility focus groups developing common approaches Engaging subject-matter experts to document best practices. Assess together, refine. 14
161F Sub-Project: 4. Meter Performance and Reliability Testing Addressing the meter-centric topics that are regularly discussed in this forum: Hot socket detection Meter over voltage tolerance/sensitivity DC field (currents and magnets) Accelerated life testing 2 to 150 KHz sensitivity 15
Looking Ahead Member Sharing: Projects and investigations that you are conducting, or planning to conduct soon? Member Interests/needs: Further follow-up needed on previous topics? New issues that need investigation? 16
Open Discussion 17
