Smart Meters at Home Nearly 5 million smart meters installed in Ontario 1.8 million smart meters in British Columbia Over 500,000 smart meters in Alberta Hydro Quebec has installed 1.7 million smart meters, and will complete 3.8 million installations by 2018 Source: Canadian Electricity Association 8
The Evolving Grid Ontario's early implementation of smart meters gave the province a head start in smart grid deployment. Connecting the customer to the control room -- new possibilities as consumers decide how much to use or sell depending on what the price is. ngimages/pages/ontario% 27s-Power-System/Smart- Grid/default/IESO-systemdiagram_980.png 9
The Evolving IESO The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the heart of Ontario's power system ensuring there is enough power to meet the province's energy needs in real time while also planning and securing energy for the future, through: Planning Enabling Conservation Ensuring Supply Operating the Grid Engaging Stakeholders and Communities 10
The Evolving Utility Sources: OEB 2014 Yearbook of Electricity Distributors and Canadian Electricity Association 11
Ontario s Smart Metering System One of the largest shared service systems in the world supporting 70 LDCs and 8 authorized agents One of the largest transactions systems in North America adding 100 to 120 million records every day Reliably processing meter reads and delivering data for billing of all residential and small general service customers in Ontario 12

2015 Successes MDM/R Technical Enhancements LDC Training and Support Optimizations LDC Mergers & Acquisitions Processes New LDC Self Serve & Reporting Capabilities Big Data Explorations 15
2015 Accomplishments The SME Academy The IESO initiated and completed a project to develop the SME Academy ; a repository of interactive web-based training modules for LDCs to complement the classroom training sessions currently being offered. Delivering this training content as interactive on-line modules allows LDCs to review the training modules at their own convenience from any location. The IESO will continue to encourage LDCs to suggest training content that would be useful to them. 16
2015 Accomplishments LDC Analytics Dashboard and Service Desk The SME has developed an interactive dashboard for LDCs that will allow them to select a time period and view real-time analytics: Synchronization processing Meter Read data submissions Billing processing Several enhancements were made to the LDC-facing Service Desk : GUI User Validation, Enhanced Technical Interface Specifications (TIS) and Reports Technical Specifications (RTS), new articles added to the Knowledge Base 17
2015 Accomplishments LDCs M&A Process The SME consulted with LDCs on the best approach for a MDMR-specific Mergers & Acquisitions Business Process. In addition to outlining the process and training LDCs, the SME worked closely with Siemens emeter, to develop a custom EnergyIP application that supports the LDCs M&A process. The process and supporting tool have been successfully exercised during two mergers and acquisitions in 2015 with more scheduled in SME Process Mergers & Acquisitions 18
2015 Accomplishments MDM/R Upgrade Siemens emeter EnergyIP, the software platform of the MDM/R, was upgraded to EIP Version 7.6. The new version addressed a significant number of identified issues and brought the MDM/R to the most deployed supported version of EnergyIP. The project was architected such that LDCs did not need to make any changes to their business processes. The cutover to the new platform was completed in March
2015 Accomplishments MDM/R Data Mart The SME has architected and developed the MDM/R Data Mart to improve the resiliency of the MDM/R and to address the growing volumes of Web Services Requests. At this point, the Data Mart will have no restrictions to the amount of data and will be available for 24/7 access. The Data Mart is currently in the final internal testing phase, with an LDC pilot planned in early/mid Q
2015 Accomplishments Enhanced Data Access IESO s Foundation Project investigating how to enhance the value of the data set within MDM/R, with the following recommendations: Including geo-location, customer identifier or other relevant information Developing a framework / protocol that governs access to data from the MDM/R and builds in Privacy by Design The government is also investigating the implementation of a MDM/R Data Access Platform or MDAP, a separate project, with some common elements including the need to address privacy matters. 21
2016 Roadmap MDM/R Technical Optimizations - MDM/R infrastructure refresh and system improvements - MDM/R software upgrades - MDM/R Data Mart LDC Business Operations Enhancements - MDM/R Analytics Enhancements - MDM/R Dashboard - MDM/R Reports and Service Desk Smart Metering Data Evolution - Internal IESO opportunities (conservation, planning) - External data exploration, data access and analytics opportunities 22
