Review: Gartner View on BIAN (1/2) Universality and Stability: Ease of Implementation, Tool and Third-Party Support Gartner has given BIAN a "low" rating for this factor, largely due to the immaturity of the standard and the high-level nature of the service definitions currently published. Although the initial service definitions are a bit thin and lack formality at this point, version 2.0 of the metamodel and service landscape promises increased rigor (availability is expected by year-end 2010) Overall Potential Value Impact of BIAN: BIAN has the potential of providing significant value to banks and vendors pursuing SOA initiatives, if it is successful in providing a standardized services landscape and vocabulary for discussing, assessing and comparing SOA approaches in banks. Varying values or primary benefits will be gained by different banking segments as BIAN mature and becomes more viable [ ] BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
Review: Gartner View on BIAN (2/2) Recommendations: For large and midsize banks with complex SOA initiatives: Map your SOA architecture to the BIAN service landscape, and identify commonalities and differences. [ ] Participate in BIAN to ensure that your business requirements and architectural preferences for the service landscape are heard and addressed, and to network with banks with concerns similar to your own. Adopt BIAN definitions for business areas and domains, and for services, in conversations with vendors and other banks. Press vendors to show how their products and services map to the BIAN service landscape as part of vendor selection. For banks with single-vendor (or limited vendor) SOA environments: Use BIAN participation as one measure of vendors' commitment to SOA. For areas where BIAN is actively building more-granular service specifications including payment and lending press vendors to demonstrate how they are supporting these specifications as part of vendor selection. 11 Agenda BIAN Introduction The BIAN Service Landscape 1.5 Deep Dive Q&A by attendees Closing remarks BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network 11
PART I - Service Landscape What is the BIAN Service Landscape The BIAN Service Landscape is a reference framework containing all of the identified BIAN Service Domains organized for ease of access. The BIAN Service Domain represents a generic business capability for which BIAN seeks to define the standard canonical semantic services for the banking industry Version 1.5 retains the established BIAN Service Landscape format of: Business Areas Business Domains Service Domains BIAN Service Landscape version 1.5 Business Area Business Domain Service Domain BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART I - Service Landscape What is a BIAN Service Domain The BIAN Service Domain is a generic IT supported business capability. It is the elemental building block of the Service Landscape. The Service Domain offers and consumes services in the execution of business these services are the industry standards that BIAN seeks to define The Service Domain supports a unique and discrete business purpose Is elemental (i.e. not made up of smaller Service Domains) It is responsible for the execution of its purpose using its own capabilities and through service based delegation to other Service Domains To fulfill its role it maintains instances of its focus object for their full life-cycle It may handle a single or multiple instances of its focus object depending on its business role The life-cycle can be short or long-lived again depending on the Service Domain s business role Any business event or activity can be represented as a service based collaboration between a selection of Service Domains Service Domains and their semantic services are canonical semantic designs Service Domain Mechanics Full Lifecycle Instances Local State Offered Services Consumed Services BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART I - Service Landscape Version 1.5 is a significant enhancement to the published Version 1.0 Same Business Area layout as V1.0 - retained the Business Area structure with minimal changes to Business Area definitions Re-worked Business Domains along functional lines - significant re-working of Business Domains within the established Business Areas Candidate Service Domain checks - item level reviews and discussions confirmed ~250 candidate Service Domains, mapping to existing designs where available Developed a sub-structure -a provisional sub-structure has been built into the Operations & Execution Business Area this structure was deemed the minimum necessary for Version 1.5 but will be refined for Version 2.0 Defined four levels of Service Domain development maturity BIAN Service landscape V1.0 Reference Data Business Partner Financial Instruments Market Data Banking Product Common Business Information Sales & Service Marketing Sales Servicing Wealth Management Sales & Service Reporting Business Area BIAN Service landscape V1.5 Operations & Execution Customer Loans Customer Deposits Financial Markets Securities Port. Management Bundled Products Payments Cards Cash Management Trade Finance Messaging Calculation Services Position Mgmt Taxation Billing Oper. Authorization Collateral Admin. Reconciliation Operational Reporting Analytics Market Oriented Analytics and Customer Behavior Enterprise Level Reporting, Strategy Management Finance and Risk Valuation Cross Analytical Data and Methods Business Support Business Domain/Service Domain Established BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network Scheduled Confirmed Proposed
PART I - Service Landscape Version 1.5 include several significant areas where additional design work is scheduled to be addressed prior to Version 2.0 including: Party party spans customer reference data and alliance type relationships Channels an explanatory paper is needed to explain how channels are handled in a service centered architecture. Product Hierarchies how to handle product dimensions / hierarchies effectively Distressed Account Handling the stages of troubled account handling need to be covered Risk and Analytics this is a Business Area where the business domains and service domains include place-holders as extensive design and specification work is needed. BIAN Service landscape V1.5 BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network 15
PART II - Service Landscape - Version 1.5 Content The Service Landscape Version 1.5 Package includes a number of published BIAN Service Landscape V1.5 elements: 1. The BIAN Service Landscape Service Domain Descriptions 2. Service Domain Definitions 3. BIAN How to Guide 4. The BIAN MetaModel A questionnaire and organization is set to capture feedback from within BIAN and the Industry in general BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - Version 2.0 Content As BIAN develops the Service Domain designs other design elements are being used that will be part of the Version 2.0 release early next year: 1. The BIAN Business Scenario 2. The BIAN Level 1 Template 3. The BIAN Level 2 Template BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide The BIAN How to Guide is a working document that will be refined with use. Currently it has three main sections going into increasing levels of detail to target different audiences. Section 1 Overview provides general context and an overview for all audiences 1. Setting the scene 2. BIAN objectives with this document 3. Outline of the Service Landscape and its constituent Service Domains Section 2 How to Use BIAN Designs provides a description of the BIAN materials to help members reference and adopt the BIAN standards 1. The BIAN Design Framework 2. The key BIAN design artifacts (Service Landscape, Business Scenarios, Level-1 to 3 Templates) 3. Supporting materials (the Metamodel and tooling) 4. Examples of Use brief summaries only BIAN hopes to develop case studies in time 5. Command & Control - Going from the Service Landscape to an Enterprise Blueprint Section 3 How BIAN generates its designs provides an explanation of the BIAN design rationale for SOA architects 1. Process Vs SOA design context 2. BIAN alignment to other standards bodies 3. What is a BIAN Service Domain 4. An Operational Property Checklist and four tests of the Service Domain design BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide Section 1 - Overview The first section is intended for all audiences and seeks make the following points: What is the purpose of the document? Establishes that BIAN is publishing a draft with Version 1.5 and seeking industry feedback Places BIAN s purpose in the context of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Describes the BIAN Service Landscape Introduces the concept of the Service Domain as the vehicle for defining semantic service standards Concludes by describing how far BIAN has got with Version 1.5 BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide Section 2 - Applying the BIAN Service Landscape The second section is intended for the employees of member organizations that wish to apply the BIAN designs and standards. It contains the following: The BIAN SOA Design Framework a description of the collection of the five design artifacts and how they fit together A description of each of the design elements, in each case describing what they are and how they can be used: The Service Landscape (with underlying brief Service Domain definitions) The Business Scenario The BIAN Level-1 Template (Service Domain functionality) Note: the templates will be covered briefly on Thursday and in detail on Friday includes key design elements (focus object, generic object, qualifiers) The BIAN Level-2 Template (Service Domain semantic service standards) The BIAN Level-3 Template (Message specification not developed) A description of supporting materials the BIAN Metamodel in particular Command & Control relating the Service Landscape to a specific enterprise 8 Examples of use summaries in advance of case studies A little more detail on the last point follows BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide Section 2 - Applying the BIAN Service Landscape The current version of the guide lists eight standard uses of BIAN designs. BIAN is seeking to develop case studies covering these possible uses (and others that may emerge) in later releases of the guide. The Examples of Use listed are: 1. Assessing or Implementing a Point Solution 2. Product Launch 3. Core Systems Repurposing 4. Application Portfolio Rationalization 5. Mergers & Acquisition 6. Vendor Solution Alignment (Bank & Vendor views) 7. Investment Planning 8. Outsourcing / In-sourcing BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide Section 3 - BIAN Design Foundation The final section is intended for business and technology SOA architects wishing to better understand and critique the evolving BIAN design approach: Service Oriented Architecture how is it different from more conventional process based design The BIAN perspective business architecture VS software architecture The Governing Concepts behind the BIAN approach How BIAN lines up with other key industry standards bodies The BIAN Service Domain a vehicle to define canonical semantic services Observed Operational Properties of the Service Domain Four evolving techniques used to specify a Service Domain 1. Rightsizing its focus object 2. Completing its functional specification (Level-1 template) 3. Completing its service specification (Level-2 template) 4. Selecting its functional pattern - one of 24 current possibilities Note: There is a brief Section 4 covering open items & the way forward BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide Section 3 - BIAN Design Foundation TEST 1 Right-size the Focus Object The operational properties provide a general check list for scoping a possible Service Domain. The first more formal design technique involves right sizing the Service Domain s focus object: External Party: External Party Alliance Partner Customer Agent Broker Retail Corporate Institution Custodian Card SMB MM Correspondent Branch National Equities Regulator Finance Multi-Nat HNW Further decomposition results in a loss of meaningful business context features become utility in nature BIAN Membership determines at what level of granularity to pitch the Service Domain design: Agent Members can combine Service Domains (combining capabilities and services) if the BIAN SD are too fine grained: Retail Members can specialize Service Domains (and BIAN can define allowed versions) for Service Domains that are too coarsely grained: SMB BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - How To Guide BIAN How To Guide Section 3 - BIAN Design Foundation TEST 2&3 Document the Service Domain Design Level-1 defines the functional capabilities Level-2 defines the semantic services Level-1 Template Note these templates have not been published in Version 1.5 Level-2 Template BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART II - Service Landscape - Metmodel BIAN s Metmodel underpins all of the designs. The Metamodel warrants a webinar on its own, some key points of note (taken from the How to Guide): ISO compliant the BIAN metamodel is an extension of the metamodel defined by the ISO financial industry standard. BIAN s metamodel adds features to support BIAN s unique semantic designs of the Service Domain and associated structures. By virtue of the fact that the BIAN Metamodel extends the ISO Metamodel, BIAN adopts the ISO structures for lower-level design elements, avoiding the need to create additional, potentially conflicting definitions Alignment for Tooling by ensuring all BIAN design concepts align to the BIAN Metamodel, options for providing tooling support are enabled for the range of Service Domain related designs and standards, including the BIAN Business Vocabulary. Cross Standard Mapping the BIAN metamodel defines structures that support mapping between different vocabularies (both standard and proprietary). Note the image is of an early version of the complete BIAN metamodel BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
PART III Roadmap to the Future BIAN Service Landscape Version 1.5 is an interim draft for industry comment. BIAN s goal is to develop a more complete and robust Version 2.0 for publication in early Some of the key tasks ahead with the publication of V1.5 include: 1. Establish and process feedback - procedures and the supporting organization are set up to capture, review and apply feedback from both the membership and the broader banking industry 2. Finalize updates to the BIAN Level 1 & 2 templates - drafts are being used by the BIAN working groups to develop content for the Service Domains. They will be refined in use and their content will underpin the upcoming Version 2.0 release 3. Business Scenarios a design tool used alongside the templates is a graphical representation of an archetypical service interaction between Service Domains associated with a business event. These example designs will also accompany the Version 2.0 release 4. Define & refine a new working approach within BIAN the new templates and business scenarios support a new harvesting based approach for BIAN members to capture content and develop, review and ratify semantic service standards If you are not a BIAN member already, consider joining and helping us out BIAN 2011 BIAN Banking Industry Architecture Network
