Speeding Up Lifecycle Orchestration A BLUEPRINT FOR DELIVERING DYNAMIC SERVICES GLOBALLY, MATHEMATICAL TODAY EVOLUTIONS FOR RISK MANAGEMENT: THETARAY ANOMALY DETECTION ALGORITHMS ARE A GAME CHANGER Whitepaper
A FAILURE TO COMMCATE Decades after the introduction of international direct dialing, it s unbelievable that it still takes weeks or months to set up advanced but widely-used services like VPNs between Provider (SP) domains. This is because creating such services is still based on manual interaction between SPs via s, faxes, and telephones. Such archaic methods are used to negotiate service levels and prices, and to agree on settings for routers and other network equipment. To complicate matters, it is estimated that about a quarter of all advanced services span multiple SPs today. This situation is due to the fact that SPs still depend heavily on legacy business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS). These systems are based on proprietary technologies and are tailored to the needs of each SP. Since no standards exist for these BSS/OSS to communicate with each other, setting up services between SP domains depends on outdated manual processes. Moreover, the monolithic architectures of these BSS/OSS make it too complex and cost-prohibitive to create proper interfaces between them. This problem even exists within individual SP domains, usually a result of M&A activity, but where technical integration of the acquired systems has not taken place. To further complicate matters, emerging technologies, like SDN for per-flow routings and NFV for full scalability of network functions, are creating new requirements to support elastic and ever-changing services. WE NEED A SOLUTION NOW! The industry started working on frameworks such as Lifecycle s Orchestration to overcome this failure of SPs communicating effectively with each other. But adoption is slow and arduous, and may not get us there fast enough in this rapidly evolving technology and competitive environment. ECI has spearheaded an initiative that shows how the process can be sped up by using an overlay approach. Such an approach enables Providers, large and small, to deliver dynamic services across multiple domains, today. 2
THE PROMISE OF LIFECYCLE SERVICE ORCHESTRATION SDN and NFV present an impetus and an opportunity. They will drive dramatic changes to existing BSS/OSS, even spawning a new-generation of systems that are needed to manage a dynamic service and network environment. Lifecycle Orchestration (LSO), initiated by MEF, is a framework that takes advantage of these changes. LSO defines business and operational functions for next generation BSS/OSS and the interfaces between them. The purpose is to facilitate and automate service ordering and setup across multiple administrative domains, whether within a single SP, or distributed among multiple SPs. The desired result is a dynamic service experience for enterprise end-users, whose services span multiple providers and geographies. Self-service Web Portal User Endpoint LSO Cantata LSO Allegro NFV MANO FRAMEWORK FRAMEWORK CAPAILITIES Business Applciations LSO Legato SDN Controller LSO Sonata Operator Endpoint Packet SDN Controller LSO Legato Business Applciations Traditional EMS Fulfillment Performance Control Assurance Usage Analytics Security Policy User Endpoint Based on MEF Wiki diagram: LSO Reference Architecture and Capabilities Head Office SDN Switch VNF VNF VNF VNF Network Operator 1 ENNI Packet PNFs Network Operator 2 Packet PNFs Cloud Provider End-to-End LSO Architecture In its vertical dimension, LSO distinguishes between business applications (generally handled by BSS) and service orchestration functions (generally handled by OSS). Horizontally, the architecture distinguishes between the SP domain from which the customer requests the service, and the partner provider domain, whose cooperation is required to fulfill part of the service. LSO is the only industry-wide initiative that currently enables automatic creation and management of end-to-end inter-carrier WAN services, combining SDN connectivity with NFV virtualization. For example, only through LSO, you can ask a partner SP to instantiate a Virtual Network Function (VNF) in its domain as part of an end-to-end service. 3
INTER-CARRIER OVERLAY SPEEDING UP LSO IMPLEMENTATION Even with broad industry support, full realization of the LSO vision will take a long time. This is due to the lengthy nature of the standardization process requiring many submissions, meetings, validation, and negotiations between parties, often with conflicting agendas. Some of the interfaces are also complex, encompassing a collection of APIs for a range of purposes. Providers cannot wait for all the necessary LSO interfaces to be finalized and implemented in a new generation of BSS/ OSS. The long and inefficient process of establishing simple Carrier Ethernet services spanning multiple SP domains requires a reasonable solution today without waiting until the full LSO solution is realized and available in the market. The most painful problem, and the one which is completely unresolved in proprietary systems, is the lack of standard interfaces between the BSS/OSS systems of different operators. To address this, ECI proposes a new inter-carrier overlay concept to speed up the availability of the functionality provided by the LSO Sonata and Interlude interfaces that connect BSS/OSS. This is realized via an Inter-Carrier Gateway (ICSG). The ICSG interfaces to legacy BSS/OSS on one side through an integration process, as is currently done with proprietary systems and outputs standard LSO Sonata/Interlude protocols on the other. The advantage of this approach is that adaptation is done for each BSS/OSS individually, and no coordination is needed. This is handled transparently by the ICSGs that use the common LSO protocols to communicate with each other. Inter-Carrier Gateway (ICSG) Provider B BSS OSS Proprietary Legato LSO Sonata Legato Proprietary Provider B BSS OSS Network A Network B Enterprise A Enterprise B LSO Inter Carrier Overlay a conceptual view The ICSG speeds up the realization of LSO benefits. It enables automation of WAN services that traverse SP domains, while enabling operators to benefit from their existing BSS/OSS. By adopting an inter-carrier overlay approach, Providers can benefit immediately from global service automation, while pursuing gradual and systematic upgrades of the proprietary systems to become fully LSO-compliant. 4
PROVING THE LSO AND INTER-CARRIER OVERLAY CONCEPTS At MEF16 in November 2016, ECI conducted a proof-of-concept with Comcast, TATA, and Telecom Italia -Sparkle to demonstrate the viability of the LSO framework. The POC showed how an international Carrier Ethernet E-line service with a guaranteed SLA can be turned up in minutes. The service extended from Baltimore to Frankfurt, spanning the three carriers, and was used to transport a cloud-sourced video stream with verified performance. In 2017, this POC is being turned into a permanent MEF sandbox project, with PCCW replacing Comcast. Open to all MEF members, it features live APIs to create and test multi-domain services. ECI uses this project to work with its SP partners to advance the LSO architecture and to demonstrate the viability of the inter-carrier overlay concept. An ECI LSO-demo engine exists at its core, providing APIs for the LSO interfaces and implementing an Inter-Carrier Gateway (ICSG). In one demo, an Asian enterprise requests a connection from PCCW to stream high quality video from a cloud location in Hong Kong to a physical location in the US, which is not on PCCW s network. PCCW then uses the ECI LSO-demo engine to negotiate with TI-Sparkle and TATA to setup this connection in real time. This demo builds upon and extends the MEF16 POC in two significant ways: 1. The APIs on the LSO-demo engine are driving actual (non-emulated) implementations of the recently published LSO Sonata interface. This proves the viability of the interface. 2. The demo incorporates PCCW s active proprietary OSCAR OSS. Communication with OSCAR is being performed by the ICSG, proving the inter-carrier overlay concept. 6 The biblical story about the Tower of Babel was of one of humankind s first major engineering undertakings, as well as one of its first major management failures. All the people on earth were living in one place, speaking one language, and united in an idea to make a name for themselves by building a mighty city and a tower with its top in the heavens. However, God disrupted the work by mixing the language of the workers so that they could no longer understand one another. The city was never completed, and the people were dispersed over the face of the earth. The lesson is that communication difficulties usually lead to failures in the realization of any vision. ECI shows how to speed up the availability of new interfaces that enable service providers to communicate with each other to setup advanced services that traverse administrative domains. CONCLUSIONS LSO promises to significantly shorten the creation and management of WAN services, especially those that cross domains of multiple operators. In addition, LSO ensures that SDN and NFV work together across a multidomain space. However, the effort required to complete the vision of the LSO is considerable, and it can take a long time until LSO is widely available, commercially. An inter-carrier overlay approach, which interconnects proprietary BSS/ OSS belonging to different operators using an inter-carrier service gateway (ICSG), allows Providers to enjoy the main advantages of LSO without waiting for the full solution to be developed.
