10 Understanding the User Understanding the user s perspective is important to determining how to execute a solution that supports them. Who will be using the technology and when? What are their KPIs and responsibilities? What are their decision rights and management levels? What are the complexities and areas of responsibilities? What are their computer literacy levels?

26 SECHABA BI Project Phase I & II Who is Sechaba Medical Solutions? Sechaba is the administration company to the Sizwe Medical Scheme. They manage the operational as well as the strategic activities of the medical scheme. Sizwe is a relatively small (150K members) but one of the oldest medical aid companies in South Africa. Sechaba offers a complete outsourced service to Sizwe, from claims processing, membership administration and importantly risk and benefit management. What was their need? Sechaba Business users were using static Crystal reports provided by their internal IT department. They were unable to query and analyse the data for themselves. The process was NOT working. The key objective of the project was to provide a SELF SERVICE solution which would allow the users to analyse, query and build their own reports on the fly.

An enterprise data warehouse solution was implemented that spans across all key areas of the business A key challenge for Sechaba is that the database platform for their enterprise applications is an object-oriented database. This allows for rapid development and extension of their operational systems but makes reporting VERY difficult. SAP Data Services is used as the ETL tool, and reports and dashboards are delivered through Web Intelligence and Explorer.

Although it s still early in the journey to realising the vision of being an informationdriven organisation, the benefits of having access to up-to-date information in a friendly and easily accessible manner are already evident. The main target audience throughout the project was middle management The solutions provided allows these managers to answer the fundamental (who, what, when) questions about their business operations as well quickly aggregate and analyse trends all from a single portal.
