33 33 Honor Oak Station There has been a proposal for a new 5km long tunnel extension to the local rail network, with a new train station to be located in Honor Oak. This meeting is for residents and stakeholders local to Honor Oak. The site is currently an old abandoned building, local youths sometimes gather here at night. There was recently a small fire within the building. There is a school, football club, underground reservoir and bird sanctuary very close to the proposed site.

35 Public Consultation 35 You will be split into groups of 4 or 5, with each group representing an interested party which will be allocated to you. Within your group you must discuss any key concerns and issues you may have concerning the project, as well as developing a view in support of or against the project. You will then need to present your group s views at the end of the lesson. Prepare questions for other groups, but also be prepared to answer questions from other groups too!

36 36 Points to Consider Current Benefits: How does your group benefit from the land at the moment? Would these benefits be lost if a new station is built? Future Benefits: How will your group benefit from the new rail tunnel and station in the future? Think about the construction stage as well as once the tunnel is completed. Mitigation (problems to overcome): What impacts would the building of this station have on your group? How do you think these could be reduced or avoided? Do you think your group would be for or against a rail tunnel and station in the area overall? If you are against the proposal, is there an alternative option which would better suit the needs of your group?

37 37 Construction Team You are the team who would like to build a new tunnel and station in the area. You are working closely with the local council to develop the area You need to address the concerns of the interested parties In order for the project to go ahead, these parties must be satisfied as much as possible You would like to use the abandoned site as you believe it will improve the local area You think a tunnel is the best solution

38 Local Residents You are a group of people who live and work on Colyton Road and Homestall Road. You are pleased that the site is being redeveloped, but have concerns about construction work coming to the area. Points to consider: Local transport Distance and proximity of construction site Impacts on local services/employment Impacts on the community Local businesses in the area Is there a better way to use the site that the residents would prefer? 38

39 Environment Agency You are a government agency concerned with the protection of rivers, pollution and green areas. You are in favour of redeveloping abandoned land, but want to be sure green areas are not adversely affected. Points to consider: Keeping the reservoir water clean Distance and proximity of construction site Local green areas and wildlife Waste disposal from the construction site Transportation links 39

40 40 Honor Oak School Governors You are a group responsible for the local girls school. You are looking to encourage people to join the school. Points to consider: Safety of the students at the school How will students be kept away from the dangers of a construction site? Proximity of the construction site to the school Working hours of the site How would a new station affect the students travelling to and from school?

41 41 Friends of Peckham Rye Park You are a campaign group which includes managers of the local bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary has a visitor centre which is open to the public during the summer. Points to consider: You want to keep the area as natural and green as possible You are concerned about how the birds in the sanctuary will react to a construction site How are birds using the site as it is at the moment? What will happen to them when a station is built?

42 42 Athenlay Football Club You are the management team for the football club opposite the new station site, including the owner of the ground. Points to consider: Transport to and from matches Traffic in the area during and after construction Parking limitations Working hours of the site Attracting new team members for the club

43 43 Honor Oak Golf Club You are the committee for the golf club in the local area. The club holds a tournament every summer for local residents and golf club members. Points to consider: Effects of the construction work on existing golf club members How will a new train link impact the golf club? How will people access the golf club if the road is blocked? Will potential new members be encouraged or put off using the golf course throughout the project?
