4 UNIT 4: SECTION 0 DEFINITIONS Ontario Revision Section O Object and Scope are deleted Code definitions maintain industry standards for correct interpretation of technical terms. Low voltage means exceeding 30 but not exceeding 750 V inclusive EMT is tubing not conduit National Building Code of Canada means Ontario Building Code Requirements of the Supply Authority means the Supply Authority s own requirements not the Ontario Electrical Safety Code Module 1 Specific definitions can be found in the more specific supplementary or amendatory sections of the Code. 5 MODULE 2 UNIT 1: SECTION 2 GENERAL RULES Scope Rule The Code does not apply to installations: intended to sell or distribute power to the public, used for communication purposes, or for railways, aircraft, mines, marine vessels, automobiles Module 2 Inspection Rule application must be filed before or within 48 hours of starting work see contractors responsible for electrical installations, must make sure it complies with the Code connection authorization issued even though all portions of the installation have not been inspected Periodic inspection Rule routine electrical work in a premise can be inspected within a customer designated time period Refusal to inspect Rule may be refused due to previous non-compliance with Code 15
6 UNIT 3: SECTION 4 CONDUCTORS Ampacity, use and correction factors of wire and cables Rule Tables 1, 2, 3, and 4 do not take voltage drop into consideration for voltage drop see Tables D3 and D4 true neutral not to be counted in determining ampacities identified white wire to be counted in determining ampacities neutral supported cable ampacities listed in Table 36A and 36B bonding conductor not to be counted in determining ampacities correction factors apply only to power and lighting, not to control conductors or auxiliary gutters Table 5A correction factors for ambient exceeding 30 C Table 5B correction factor for free air rating conductors run in contact for up to 4 conductors and Tables 2 or 4 for more than 4 in contact Table 5C for multi-conductor cables run in contact for more than 600 mm lowest temperature rating applies where conductors in same raceway have different ratings lower ampacity applies for underground to above ground transition exception (17) higher ampacity applies for 4 conductors or less and length is maximum 3 m or 10% of run, whichever is less 22
