Installation Manual Printed by: NATURE INTERNATIONAL NEW ZEALAND LTD. Post: PO Box north harbour, north shore 0751 AUCKLAND NEW Zealand IMPORTANT Read this manual before attempting to install your undertile heating element. Incorrect installation could damage the heating element and will invalidate your warranty.
Contents Heating elements 3 Heating elements 4 Electrical provision 5 Subfloor preparation NBU undertile heating DIY kit is easy to install, with step by step instruction system included with manual. Before installation please double check that you have the correct heating kit for the area you wish to heat. NBU heating elements are set length continuous resistance wires with 2.5m conducting cables(cold tail) connected to each end. The heating element must not be cut, shortened or lengthened. 3 Electrical provision Subfloor preparation The electrician must install a dedicated RCD or use an existing RCD. No more than 4.8KW of heating may be connected to each 30 milliamp RCD. For larger loads, use multiple RCD or 100 milliamp RCD. All electrical connections must be carry by a registered electrician. ±1500mm from floor level Connect to power supply Mount flushbox Vertically only Draw wire min 25mm hole Prior to installation, it is important that the subfloor is prepared. Floor must be entirely clean, dry and level, and if necessary, sand or grind the floor first. A clean working surface will mean good adhesion for a long installation life. Timber or MDF subfloor Timber or MDF subfloor should be boarded over with plywood or tile underlay board, and then screwed or nailed down. Note: Tile underlay isn't necessary if h e a t i n g a r e a i s t o b e r e q u i r e d waterproofed. Waterproofing must be coated before heating wire is installed. Solid concrete subfloor Tie knot tape or staple to floor The NBU insulation board is installed between the undertile heating and concrete subfloor, It not only does increase in the response time of heating, but also improves energy efficiency and running cost. The installation should comply with following Codes of Practice; NZ Electrical Codes of Practice NZS3000:
Calculate the actual spacing of heating wire Typical heating wire design layout Every area and layout is different, below are some examples of design layout, the diagrams may help you work out your required layout and coverage. 1. Work out the actual sqm to be heated(see grey shaded area)e.g 4.32 sqm. Note :Using a pen or crayon draw on the floor the exact area to be heated, mark away from objects such as shower trays with a spacing mm. Be sure not to lay the heating wire in areas that may have fixtures installed after tiling, such as door stops and toilets. F S 2. Divide this figure by the length (e.g HL650,54M)of the wire to be used m2 54 m =0.08 F S 3.Multiply this figure by =80mm. This is the spacing (A) (B) required between wires. F S Summary: Spacing(mm)= 2 Heated Area(m ) Length of the cable(m) 1000 Type of flooring MIN space(mm) MAX space(mm) S F Timber Concrete If using NBU insulation board with concrete (C) (D) 6 7
Installation step 1 Installation step 2 A Chisel out channels for the power supply cables and the floor probe wire. It will be necessary to chisel out or chase short channels in the subfloor at the start point ; end point and the floor probe A Mark the heating wire position on the floor. Calculate in square meters the size of the area to be heated. Chisel out channels for power supply cable(s) and the floor probe wire wire. This minimizes the increased height presented by the two black power supply cables Measure up.two points should be at least 50mm apart. B B Using a pen, mark a start point as Clean and sweep floor, ensure the floor close as possible to the power supply. surface is smooth, dry, and free from dust or grease. Smooth, clean and dry flo or Mark start point C Paint the subfloor with NBU primer. Apply the primer evenly to the entire surface, that is to be heated. The primer must dry for 1-3 hours. Avoid traffic over the subfloor once the C Mark all the outer corners of the heated area observing the perimeter distances. Mark up the spacing intervals for the heating wire following Calculate the actual spacing of heating wire notes section.(page 6) Apply primer evenly primer has been applied. Mark perimeter and spacing intervals 8 9
Installation step 3 A Lay wire out from start point Lay out heating wire and secure with fixing tape. After 2.5 meters of cable has been removed, you will find the point at which the power supply cable joins the heating wire. The joint should be taped to the floor at the start points( the first of chiseled channels). D Lay out balance of heating wire When 90% of heating wire has been laid down, unroll the remaining wire and second power supply cable(black) from spool. Tape this joint to the end point(which is second chiseled channel). B Lay out heating wire in parallel lines You will note a halfway marker on the heating wire, that allow a gauge to your heating cover, relative to remaining heating wire. E Adjust wire spacings if necessary In order to achieve balanced coverage of the area to be heated, you need to adjust some of wire spacing. Once the wire laying is complete, the two black power supply cables need to be carefully pulled up into the wall cavity using the draw wire. Note:The heating wire part is never into the wall cavity. C Using the wire spacing markings as tape F Band duct tape to hold the heating wire. down points, secure the heating wire to the floor with duct tape. 500MM The strips should be about 25mm(1 inch) long. Space and secure with fixing tape Secure the wire with tape and band the tape to hold the element in palce 10 11
Installation step 4 A B Fix floor probe Cleck resistance using multi-meter Fix floor temperature probe. Probe wire comes through the wall cavity with two black power supply cables. Place the floor probe between two rows of heating wire and tape on the floor, usually distance m into the heated area. Testing the heating wire. NBU heating wire has been comprehensively tested in manufacture factory. Check the resistance on the heating wire using a multi meter, confirm the reading against factory specifications(label on the cardboard spool). allowed. working. Note: +/-5.0% Ohm reading tolerance is Do not tile if the heating wire is not Self-leve lling screed :It is not only used to protect the heating wi re after installation and during tiling, but also to avo id dama ge the heating wi re in the future during tile repair or replaceme nt. Screed mu st be required for the parquet floor covering. C D Connection and test the cable moniter Install the thermostat Connection with CABLE MONITOR Read the detail on the cable monitor to connect the heating wire with the CABLE MONITOR. Ensure the batteries are correctly installed. Test: Turn the cable monitor switch to the ON position, the alarm will sound. Turn to OFF position, the alarm sound will stop. The cable monitor is working. Turn to OFF position during connection to the heating wire, then turn to ON position, now your floor is ready for tiling. If the alarm sounds during the tiling procedure, stop all work and call for technical assistance. Thermostat must be installed after tile adhesive has full dried ( min 7 days). Remove the cable monitor, testing the heating wire again using multi-meter, confirm the heating wire is working. Connect thermostat with the heating wire power supply cable according Installing the thermostat notes section ( Page 14 ). 13
