1 Building Enclosure Details From buildings that keep the rain out to thermally insulated and conditioned building enclosures FOR ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, BUILDING OFFICIALS AND BUILDERS QUEENSTOWN CHRISTCHURCH AUCKLAND WELLINGTON
2 Saving Energy An energy efficient home reduces your running costs and carbon footprint. Health If your home is warm and drier all year round it has a positive effect on your health as it provides the optimum protection against mould and mildew. Healthy Indoor Air Y E S P L E A S E! Comfort With indoor air temperatures between degrees Celsius and relative humidity between 40 % - 60 % all year round you feel more comfortable in your home. Investment protection A well designed and built home, allowing for maximum drying capacity, offers the best protection against leaky building syndrome.
3 PROGRAMME SPEAKERS 2.30 pm - 3 pm Registration and refreshments 3 pm - 4 pm Gleb Speranski, InsulPro PERFORMANCE OF ACOUSTIC AND THERMAL INSULATION 4 pm - 5 pm Thomas van Raamsdonk, pro clima INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL MOISTURE CONTROL 5 pm - 6 pm Steve Alexander, Caleb Parker, Alexander&Co BUILDING ENCLOSURE DETAILS, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE 6 pm pm Refreshments Gleb Speranski, Technical Manager, InsulPro Gleb is an electrical engineer. For the last 10 years Gleb has been specialising in energy efficiency of New Zealand houses with emphasis on thermal insulation. Gleb works closely with BRANZ and other research organisations to work out the most effective means for improving thermal performance of New Zealand buildings, both new and existing. Thomas van Raamsdonk, General Manager, pro clima Thomas gained an engineering degree specialising in building physics and energy efficiency from the University of Applied Science in Rosenheim, Germany, then completed an internship as an engineer in Japan. After moving to New Zealand in 2003, Thomas was the Director of several companies including until the opportunity arose to introduce pro clima to New Zealand in Steve Alexander, Director, Alexander&Co Steve is the founding Director and CEO of Alexander&Co. Limited, a company specialising in the building enclosure, applied building science, forensic investigation and building dispute resolution. Steve is a pioneer of forensic investigation and remediation of the building enclosure in New Zealand. Steve is also an arbitrator and adjudicator. Caleb Parker, Building Scientist, Alexander&Co Caleb is part of the building science research group at Alexander&Co. Limited. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto and went on to graduate with a Master s of Applied Science in Building Science from the same department. His research, publications and experience focus on leaky buildings, building enclosure design, energy efficiency, construction management, and ventilation design. Caleb also specializes in building performance computer modelling.
4 PRESENTATIONS PERFORMANCE OF ACOUSTIC AND THERMAL INSULATION Gleb Speranski Thermal performance of buildings in New Zealand is legislated through the Building Act and enforced via the Building Code. The lack of provision for thermal performance at the design stage causes wider performance and durability issues that are often very difficult and costly to remedy. What is missing from the design and construction stages and what are the ways to improve thermal performance of buildings without compromising their durability? EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL MOISTURE CONTROL Thomas van Raamsdonk Current design and build details do not provide for durable constructions to ensure no moisture or water related issues arise during the lifetime of the building. Modern construction needs to include high performance external weathertightness, internal airtightness and moisture control. The understanding of building science principles is essential. BUILDING ENCLOSURES THAT WORK Steve Alexander / Caleb Parker New Zealand design and building practitioners are now familiar with building enclosure details to keep external water out. However building design is rapidly evolving and now internal moisture and thermal efficiency have become critical issues. As we make the progression from buildings that keep rain out to thermally insulated and conditioned building enclosures, the need for new construction details becomes increasingly important.
